    • In a playback system employing a stylus to recover recorded signals from a video disc when relative motion between the disc and the stylus is established, a rotary stylus cleaner is provided. A freely pivoted, light stylus-arm carrying the stylus is mounted in a housing employed for movement of the stylus between a rest position and a play position. A rotary brush having an axis of rotation perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the stylus-arm, is located in the path of movement of the stylus between the rest position and the play position. A friction wheel mounted on the axle carrying the rotatable brush, engages the turntable and causes rotation of the brush as the stylus threads through the brush during its travel between the rest position and the play position. A comb having its teeth in engagement with the bristles of the brush is secured to the board for the purpose of cleaning the brush.

    • A keel-tipped stylus for playback of video information from a disc record comprises a tapering body, a constricted terminal region and shoulders joining the tapering body to the constricted terminal region. A method for preparing a deep groove plastic replica disc for use in lapping the constricted terminal region on the tip of the playback stylus is disclosed. The method includes the step of mechanically cutting a deep groove into a metal substrate surface with a diamond cutting stylus. The diamond cutting stylus has a tip having a shape complementary to the shape of the keel groove to be formed into the metal surface. During the mechanical cutting operation, the tip of the stylus is introduced into the metal surface to a depth sufficient to cut the deep groove to the desired depth across the surface of the metal substrate.

    • A technique for positioning a body having a tapered profile when viewed along a first axis comprises exposing the body to a first beam of light oriented along the first axis in a manner such that the tapered profile is projected as a first image onto a first linear array of photodectors disposed along a direction orthogonal to both the first axis and the direction of the taper. The body is exposed to a second beam of light oriented along a second axis orthogonal to the first axis in a manner such that a second profile of the body is projected as a second image onto a second linear array of photodetectors disposed along a direction parallel to the first axis. The body is then moved along the first and the second axes until the first and the second images strike predetermined locations along the first and second photodetector arrays. The location of the body is also changed along a third axis, orthogonal to the first and the second axes, until the width of the first image equals a predetermined width measured by the linear magnitude of the first image along the first photodetector array.
