    • A PCMCIA smart card reader with no protruding portion, with a stable mechanical design, allowing space for additional functions to be included in the PCMCIA card and that eases the insertion of a smart card. A thin support is formed between a thin upper section and a lower section of the PCMCIA smart card reader at an opening forming a smart card slot. The support is outside the smart card slot, but positioned within the PCMCIA slot and is preferably an integrated part of a PCMCIA card top cover. Since the support guides the smart card laterally at the opening of the smart card slot, only a small portion of the smart card has to be inserted into the PCMCIA card. The limited insertion of the smart card and the location, of contacts for interfacing with the smart card in the thin upper section of the smart card reader, creates space for other functions to be included in the PCMCIA card, for example, a modem. The smart card insertion is eased by a removable extension supporting. the smart card vertically during the insertion of the smart card. The removable extension may be a cable connection plug.

    • An image reading device is provided in which a number of degrees of freedom in control at a time of reading is increased. A plurality of light emitting elements, which emit light of different wavelengths, are provided in an array, and the array illuminates a photographic film. A plurality of light sensors, which receive light of plural different wavelengths, are provided and receive light transmitted through the photographic film. A controller controls each light sensor, by using a predetermined minimum charging time as a unit, such that, during a charge accumulating time which is an integer multiple of the minimum charge accumulating time, the light sensors receive the light transmitted through the photographic film. The controller controls each light emitting element such that the light emitting elements are pulse width modulated synchronously with the minimum charge accumulating time and such that one period thereof equals the minimum charge accumulating time, and emit light.

    • A photoelectric imaging device is disclosed in which the object to be imaged is illuminated by light from an external light source, such as a video display. Use of an external light source eliminates the need for a light source and its accompanying power supply to be located within the photoelectric imaging device. The portability of the photoelectric imaging device is thus enhanced. When a video display is used as the external light source, an external computer, to which the video display may be attached, may accomplish the processing required for imaging. This allows further reduction in the size, weight, complexity and cost of the photoelectric imaging device by eliminating the need for a processor and a data storage device to be located within the photoelectric imaging device.
