    • Unwanted dynamics in an optical switch are eliminated by calculating a set of new parameter values that shape an input command signal applied to the switch in accordance with an algorithm that randomly varies initial parameter values within certain constraints. The input command signal is applied to the mirror actuators in order to produce a response by the optical switch. A cost function value indicative of oscillations present in the response is calculated and compared to a previous cost function value. If the cost function value is less than the previous cost function value, the new parameter values are stored and designated as the initial parameter values for a next iteration. Following repeated iterative calculations to shape the input command signal, an optimal set of parameter values are produced.     • The invention provides an optical switch having a pair of opposed optical arrays, each optical array including a fixed mirror and a plurality of independently tiltable mirrors, at least one input port for launching a beam of light into the optical switch, said input port being disposed within a respective optical array, at least two output ports for selectively receiving a beam of light from an optical path between the at least one input port and a selected one of the at least two output ports, said at least two output ports being disposed within a respective opposed optical array, and an ATO element having optical power disposed between the pair of opposed optical arrays. The pair of opposed optical arrays is disposed in respective focal planes of the ATO element. Preferably, the ATO element has a focal length equal to a Rayleigh range of a beam of light incident thereon.

    • An optical micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) switch is disclosed. In a preferred embodiment the optical MEMS switch is used as an MnullN optical signal switching system. The optical MEMS switch comprises a plurality of optical waveguides formed on a shuttle for switching optical states wherein the state of the optical switch is changed by a system of drive and latch actuators. The optical MEMS switch utilizes a latching mechanism in association with a thermal drive actuator for aligning the waveguide shuttle. In use the optical MEMS switch may be integrated with other optical components to form planar light circuits (PLCs). When switches and PLCs are integrated together on a silicon chip, compact higher functionality devices, such as Reconfigurable Optical Add-Drop Multiplexers (ROADMs), may be fabricated.
