    • An amusement device, such as a sling-shot machine, for successively propelling and retarding a rider to cause the rider to undergo a vertically oscillatory motion. The amusement device comprises cables (31, 32) one end of each of which is connected to a carrier (19) for supporting one or more riders. A releasable anchoring means is provided for releasably anchoring the carrier (19) at a launch site (17). An elastic structure (71) has opposed ends between which the elastic structure can undergo extension and contraction. One end of the elastic structure (71) is connected to a first support means (57). Each cable (31, 32) passes around a support tower (11) and has a section thereof winding back and forth between first and second guide means (83, 85). The first guide means (83) is connected to the other end of the elastic structure (71) and the second guide means (85) is connected to a second support means (47). The winding section of the cable (31, 32) provides a link between the elastic structure (71) and the second support means (47). A hydraulic ram (67) is provided for tensioning the elastic structure (71) prior to release of the anchoring means whereby energy stored in the loaded elastic structure (71) is transferred to the cables (31, 32) to cause upward propulsion of the carrier (19) on release of the anchoring means.

    • The disclosure provides an apparatus for an amusement ride and fall. The apparatus comprises a track (10) having a discharge point below which there is a substantial drop. A thrill seeking passenger first experiences a ride by being propelled along a track (100) to the discharge point (20) and discharged there from with a horizontal component of motion. The passenger then experience a free fall. An elastic tie (70) having a secured first end and a free second end connected directly or indirectly to the passenger limits the free fall, and together with the horizontal component of motion imparted to the passenger, causes the passenger to swing and bounce for a period of time at the end of the free fall. At the end of the ride and fall the passenger is released safely. The disclosure therefore provides a thrill similar to that of a bungy or bungee jump but with enhancements. In a preferred embodiment, the passenger rides on or in a conveyance (42) releasably mounted on a carriage (34). The carriage (34) is propelled along the track (10) and at the discharge point (20) a substantial horizontal component of deceleration is imparted to the carriage (34) and enables the conveyance (42) and passenger to be discharged from the carriage (34) to continue in their own trajectory. In this embodiment the secured end of the elastic tie (70) may be attached to the carriage (34), which does not leave the track (10), and the free end may be attached to the passenger or the conveyance (42). In the latter case the passenger is secured to the conveyance.
