    • The shaft seal between a fixed housing wall (2) and a revolving shaft (1) consists of a collar (6) fixedly connected to the shaft (1), respectively one leg of the U-shaped sealing rings (69, 71) pressing against this collar. This structurally simple shaft seal is arranged in compact fashion. This seal operates in a safe and reliable manner. For the prevention of chemical accidents, a circulating pressure medium can be provided to act only on the sealing ring (69) located closest to the reaction chamber (3), and this pressure medium can be continuously monitored for traces from the reaction chamber (3) by way of an indicator. Upon the occurrence of a leak, the cavity (15) of the second sealing ring (71) is automatically pressurized, which then provides the further sealing action. Thereafter, an exchange or repair of the sealing unit (57) can be prepared at leisure.

    • The seal protection apparatus is intended to provide protection for a main mechanical seal. It comprises a first seal ring fast on the shaft of a pump and a second seal ring which is connected to the casing of the pump by means of a flexible, annular diaphragm which is exposed on one side to pumped product in the casing. The combination of seal rings and diaphragm define one end of a service liquid compartment which is supplied with pressurized, clean service water. The other end of the compartment is defined by the main seal. With a flow of service water to the compartment, the seal rings are forced apart by the water pressure. Water is able to leak between the rings into the casing thereby denying the pumped product access to the compartment and main seal. On the other hand, if the supply of service water should fail for any reason, the pumped product acts on the diaphragm and forces the seal rings together. The pumped product is again denied access to the main seal.

    • A seal assembly has a pair of relatively rotatable sub-assemblies adapted to be attached and sealed respectively to relatively fixed and relatively rotatable members to confine the flow of fluid through the space between the members to a restricted passage. Preferably, the coupling means are operable while the sub-assemblies remain in respective installed positions; include means relatively movable to seal the opposed faces of the rings from the restricted passage in the stand-by state and to expose those faces to the passage in the working state, and are operable to couple the second seal ring alternatively to the respective sub-assemblies to provide the respective states of the seal rings. Preferably also, additional seal means are provided for sealing the restricted passage.

    • A double life shaft seal includes a seal case and an elastomeric sealing annulus having first and second seal lips adapted to be sequentially contacted by a rotating shaft. A tensioned garter spring is initially located on the sealing annulus so as to bias the first seal lip into operative sealing engagement with the shaft to provide a first service life, the spring being positioned thereat by spring biased expanded constriction ring restrained against axial movement by engagement with blocking lugs on the seal case. After predetermined wear of the first seal lip, the constriction ring contracts in diameter and loses contact with the blocking lugs at which time the ring and the garter spring are axially shifted to a second position wherein the garter spring is located so as to bias the second seal lip into operative sealing engagement with the shaft to provide a second service life.
