    • A caller identity display unit for connection to a telephone line on which caller identity request signals are transmitted to the telephone network from a subscriber and caller identity signals are transmitted from the telephone network to the subscriber. Call waiting signals transmitted on the line to indicate that an attempt to call a subscriber is being made when the line is busy are detected, and a shunt circuit is connected to the line for a period of time in response to detection of the call waiting signal. The shunt circuit reduces the line voltage to a level sufficiently low to mute the subscriber's equipment.

    • An apparatus for detecting customer premise equipment alerting signals (CAS) in a first telephone having a transmit circuit and a receive circuit and a hybrid line termination for connecting the transmit circuit and the receive circuit to a central office line. The apparatus includes an off-hook detector for producing an off-hook signal identifying whether or not the first telephone is in an off-hook state, an extension-in-use detector for producing an extension-in-use signal identifying whether or not a second telephone connected to the central office line is in an off-hook state, a CAS detector selectively operable to receive the CAS signals directly from the central office line and from the hybrid line termination and a control element for controlling the CAS detector in response to the off-hook signal and the extension-in-use signal. The control element acts to enable the CAS detector to monitor the CAS signals on the central office line directly when the second telephone is in the off-hook state and enable the CAS detector to monitor the CAS signals from the hybrid line termination when the first telephone is in an on-hook state, and the second telephone is in an off-hook state.

    • A method and apparatus notifying a user of a call waiting while a telephone is on hold. A transmit signal path and a receive path between a central office line and transmitter and receiver elements in the telephone are muted to place a call on hold. A customer premise equipment alerting signal is received from the central office while the transmit signal path and receive path are muted. The receive path is un-muted after the customer premise equipment alerting signal is received and an audible message signal is generated and inserted into the receive path in response to the customer premise equipment alerting signal to notify a user that the customer premise equipment alerting signal has been received. The receive path is then re-muted.

    • Apparatus for interconnecting the Tip and Ring (210) telephone line interface to subsequent communications equipment (211) or circuits through a differential line bridge circuit that extracts one or more unidirectional paths containing predominantly far-end energy, wherein, near-end speech signals have been canceled. The differential line bridge circuit maintains the longitudinal balance of the telephone line and exhibits improved noise immunity in the recovered far-end signal. It permits all telephone supervisory, alerting and bi-directional communication signals to pass transparently between the telephone line interface (210) and the subsequent communications equipment (211) or circuits. Access to on-hook service signals, such as calling party identification and short text messaging data transmissions, is inherently provided by the line bridge. By employing one or more selectable networks (320, 330) in the line bridge, the bridge is able to adapt to the characteristics of the telephone line and provide scalable near-end speech cancellation is disclosed.

    • A communications device is presented including a DTMF detector for detecting a DTMF signal. When the DTMF signal is a Mode 2 Caller ID CAS, the first DTMF tone has a frequency of about 2130 Hz, and the second DTMF tone has a frequency of approximately 2750 Hz. An input signal includes signal energy within a first portion of the input signal frequency range which includes the first DTMF tone, signal energy within a second portion of the input signal frequency range which includes the second DTMF tone, and signal energy within a third portion of the input signal frequency range which excludes the first and second DTMF tones. The DTMF signal detector includes a first and second tone detection units, an extraneous signal detection unit, and detection logic. The first and second tone detection units receive the input signal and produce an output signal dependent upon the signal energy within the respective first and second portions of the input signal frequency range. The extraneous signal detection unit also receives the input signal and produces an output signal dependent upon the signal energy within the third portion of the input signal frequency range. The detection logic receives the output signals produced by the first and second tone detection units and the extraneous signal detection unit, and produces a DTMF detect signal dependent upon the output signals.

    • The invention is a method of receiving digital data from a Local Switching Office (LSO) on first party equipment that is communicating, in an off-hook state, via the LSO with second party equipment. The method presumes that the first party equipment has a telephone line interface that interfaces with a telephone line and an acoustic transducer interface with a loudspeaker and a microphone. The method generally includes the steps of receiving an alert signal from the LSO, temporarily preventing a first party signal from being transmitted to the line interface after receiving the alert signal, sending an acknowledgment signal to the LSO via the line interface, transmitting a predetermined comfort signal to the loudspeaker via the acoustic transducer interface while receiving the digital data via the telephone line interface to inform the user that the digital data is being received while relieving the user from having to hear the actual reception of the digital data, or from listening to a silent loudspeaker, and finally, after receiving the digital data via the telephone line interface, restoring the first party signal through the line interface and no longer transmitting the predetermined comfort signal to the loudspeaker. The digital data may contain, for example, caller ID information as transmitted to a Type 2 telephone capable of receiving such information.
