    • To test a first device, the latter is connected to a simulator which simulates at least one second device according to a test case stored in a second data set. The simulator sends messages to the first device according to the test case, receives reply messages from the first device, and stores these reply messages in the second data set. According to the invention, the test is stored in advance as an abstract test scenario in a first data set. To generate the test case, the first data set is then mapped to the second data set by means of message-structure data and by insertion of basic-setting data. For evaluation, the second data set is mapped back to the first data set by data reduction.

    • A data network switch for switching data between a plurality of data links is disclosed and includes a programmable controller which adapts the data switching in accordance with the state of the switch and the state of the data links. The programmable controller has detection apparatus which detects a problem in the operation of the switch, a memory which stores information on possible problems, their causes, and possible solutions, and a controller.     • A method and apparatus for remote maintenance and error recovery for plural stations interconnected in a distributed network. A monitor application is established within selected stations within the network in a terminate and stay resident mode. The monitor application is then automatically invoked in response to error message, reconfiguration messages, or network status messages received at that station by listing the monitor application address within user appendages associated with such error messages or reconfiguration messages within the network interface of the station. An error message may be displayed and any selected application or procedure may then be invoked by the monitor application in an application independent manner. In one embodiment of the present invention, a station may be reset remotely in response to an error message or reconfiguration message by utilizing the monitor application and the station may then be directed to establish communication with a server device in order to update system software. This may be simply accomplished within a computer station utilizing a DOS operating system by merely altering the automatic execution batch file.

Commercial integrated circuits are used to initiate a standard protocol test and synchronization sequence and to actuate an insertion relay in a network coupling unit.
