    • A photoelectric switch device for detecting an object within a field of detection on the basis of a position of the object is presented. The position is determined on the basis of a value relating to light that is reflected by the object. The photoelectric switch device has a light projecting and receiving optical arrangement disposed on a front wall of a box shaped casing, a display unit and a push type of adjusting switch disposed on a rear wall of the box shaped casing. The photoelectric switch device also has a push type of selecting/fixing/setting switch and an indicator disposed on one of walls of the box shaped casing, except the front and rear walls, and an output cable extending from a corner between the rear wall and another wall opposite to the one wall. The selecting/fixing/setting switch is used to select types of information that is to be displayed on the display unit in order to set and fix the value. The adjusting switch is used to adjust the value of information displayed on the display unit.

    • A method of non-intrusive, inductive proximity sensing of a target through a conductive barrier comprises the steps of: disposing an inductive proximity sensor on one side of a barrier of conductive material; disposing a target on the other side of the barrier; determining an appropriate drive frequency for operating the proximity sensor based on the conductive material and thickness of the barrier; and operating the proximity sensor with the appropriate drive frequency to non-intrusively sense the proximity of the target through the conductive barrier. The method may include the steps of: varying the gap between the target and proximity sensor over a gap range; measuring the inductive output of the proximity sensor at the appropriate drive frequency and different gaps to obtain inductive output measurements at the different gaps; determining the operating induction bandwidth of the proximity sensor operated at approximately the appropriate drive frequency from the inductive output measurements at the different gaps; and using the determined induction bandwidth for proximity sensing of the target through the conductive barrier. The gap range may be based on a sensor/target gap variation during actuation for a particular application.

    • In one embodiment, a proximity sensor is disclosed. The proximity sensor is adapted for use in a housing, such as an explosion-proof housing, and includes a compressible sensor plate and an interface board. The sensor plate is compressed during assembly of the housing. The proximity sensor interacts with other electrical components within and external to the housing. Furthermore, the proximity sensor may include, or interact with, a display. Components, including the proximity sensor, may be configured for use in a hazardous environment and designed to draw minimal current.
