    • An optical modulator for modulating a light beam includes a laser diode having an active region with optically flat faces at opposite ends thereof. The modulator is constructed so that oscillation of the laser diode is suppressed and a time-varying electrical modulation signal is applied to the active region. An optical isolator includes a first electronically controlled optical switch coupled to the isolator input, a second electronically controlled optical switch coupled to the isolator output and means for optical coupling between the first switch and the second switch and having associated delay T.sub.0. Square wave actuation signals are applied to the first and second switches. The square wave signals each have a cycle time T.sub.p =4T.sub.0 and the square wave signal applied to the second switch is delayed relative to the square wave signal applied to the first switch by a time T.sub.0. A single channel isolator provides a 50% duty cycle output, while a two-channel isolator having control signals delayed by one half cycle provides 100% duty cycle output. The isolator control signals can be gated with a modulation signal to provide both modulating and isolating functions.

    • A system and method for reducing or eliminating the speckle intensity distribution of a laser imaging system. In one embodiment of the invention, a radio frequency signal is injected into a semiconductor laser light source (12) for a projection system (10) to create different speckle patterns that blend together on a projection surface (19). In another embodiment of the invention, optical feedback is used to induce a laser light source for a projection system (10) to create different speckle patterns that blend together on a projection surface (19). In another embodiment of the invention, the laser light source wavelength is Doppler shifted to produce different speckle patterns. In another embodiment of the invention, a means of deflection is used to directionally move the beam to reduce noticeable speckle. Since the eye is very sensitive to horizontal and vertical edges, but less sensitive to angles in between, beam movement of approximately 45 degrees may minimize the loss of MTF in the horizontal and vertical directions.

    • A variable light capable of varying the size of light beam and an optical pickup apparatus for a different-type optical disc employing the same. The variable light source is provided with a double hetero structure formed to incorporate a multiple quantum well active layer on a semiconductor layer, a current confined structure for progressing carriers drifting toward the multiple quantum well active layer in a combined direction of a perpendicular direction with a progressing direction of a light beam, and an electrode pattern provided on the upper part of the current confined structure for varying a drift speed of carriers drifting in the progressing direction of light beam by a variable current signal. The variable light source can vary the size of light beam by controlling an amount of the variable current signal. Also, the variable light source generates an appropriate size of light beam in accordance the type of optical disc by the variable current signal, thereby simplifying the configuration of the different-type optical disc pickup apparatus.
