    • The actuator (10) of a brake, such as a disc brake, is controlled by an electric motor (34) which drives a pump (38, 50, 62) ensuring that the pressure of the brake fluid in a control chamber (44) rises. A crankshaft (38) driven by the electric motor (34) imparts a to-and-fro movement to a plunger piston (50) in a pumping chamber (62). This chamber (62) communicates with a brake-fluid reservoir via an intake duct (74) controlled by way of a valve (76, 78) and with the chamber (44) via a delivery duct controlled by way of a valve (58, 60). Furthermore, the control chamber (44) communicates with the reservoir via a recycling duct (80) controlled by way of a solenoid valve (82). The entire hydraulic circuit so formed is accommodated in the body (12) of the actuator.

    • An electrically driven master cylinder assembly and various vehicle control systems utilizing the master cylinder assembly. Several forms of master cylinder assemblies are disclosed. In the preferred form, the assembly includes an electric DC motor directly coupled to a master cylinder unit with the central axis of the motor coaxial with the central axis of the bore of the master cylinder, a ball nut is positioned within the housing of the electric motor for rotation with the armature of the motor, and a ball screw is positioned on the axis of the motor and is driven linearly in response to rotation of the armature. The free end of the ball screw engages the piston of the master cylinder so that energization of the motor operates to move the piston of the hydraulic cylinder linearly within the bore of the hydraulic cylinder to discharge fluid from the outlet of the hydraulic cylinder for delivery to a slave cylinder to perform an appropriate vehicle control function such as engagement or disengagement of the vehicle clutch or actuation of the vehicle braking system.

    • A hydraulically operated disk brake apparatus for a motor vehicle comprises a brake disk, a caliper-like brake housing disposed to straddle over the brake disk and having a pair of arms, and a pair of brake pad assemblies disposed in the brake housing in opposition to each other with the brake disk being interposed therebetween. The brake pad assemblies are movable toward and from the brake disk. A cylinder chamber is formed in one of the caliper arms and accommodates therein a first piston for pressing the adjacent brake pad assembly to the brake disk and a second piston positioned with a distance from the first piston. The second piston is operated by an externally provided actuator member to produce a hydraulic pressure in the cylinder chamber for moving the first piston and the associated brake pad assembly toward the brake disk. A reservoir for hydraulic fluid is formed in the brake housing to supply supplementary fluid into the cylinder chamber.
