    • A ducted combustion system is disclosed. The ducted combustion system includes a combustion chamber bound by a flame deck surface of a cylinder head of an internal combustion engine and by a piston top surface of a piston disposed within the internal combustion engine. The system includes a fuel injector including a plurality of orifices, the plurality of openings injecting fuel into the combustion chamber as a plurality of fuel jets. The system includes a duct structure defining a plurality of curved ducts and disposed within the combustion chamber between the flame deck surface and the piston top surface, the plurality of ducts being disposed such that each of the plurality of fuel jets, at least partially, enters one of the plurality of ducts upon being injected into the combustion chamber.

    • The present invention relates to a fuel injection control method for a direct-injection internal-combustion engine comprising at least an injector (20) of fuel jet nappe angle (a1), a cylinder (10), a cylinder head (12), a piston (18) sliding in this cylinder and connected to a crankshaft, and a combustion chamber delimited by wall (26) of the cylinder, cylinder head (12) and upper face (24) of piston (18). According to the invention, the method consists in determining a lower limit position (PL) of piston (18) below which wall (26) of the cylinder is likely to be wetted by the fuel jets coming from the injector, in determining the effective position of this piston, in locating this effective position of the piston in relation to the lower limit position and in adjusting the fuel injection parameters according to the effective position of the piston in relation to the lower limit position.

    • The invention relates to improvements in a four cycle valve-in-head internal combustion engine, the combustion chamber of which has at least one inlet and one outlet valve each of these valves having plate surfaces which are located at least substantially within the geometric cylindrical surface defined by the piston of the engine. On the one hand, the plate of the outlet valve is positioned in a zone spaced only slightly from the piston when it is the top-dead center position and thereby forms a compression surface area for portions of the charge to be compressed. On the other hand, the plate of the inlet valve is disposed in a portion of the cylinder head which defines the primary clearance volume of the combustion chamber together with the opposed piston top. The cylinder head area for the inlet valve plate includes a depression area to provide for a vortex flow of the compression charge and the arrangement in this area is such that the rotary axis of the vortex flow extends substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the inlet valve. Also, the maximum depth of the depression is smaller than the smallest diameter of the opening of the depression oriented toward the piston top or the cylinder head.
