    • An apparatus for placing fiber bales into readiness for removing fiber tufts therefrom by a travelling bale opener has a fiber bale depositing device for positioning an initial fiber bale at an inclined orientation to the vertical and for positioning, adjacent the initial fiber bale, an additional fiber bale at an angle of inclination greater than the angle of inclination of the initial bale as viewed codirectionally with the angle of the initial bale; a bale-supporting device for engaging and stabilizing the initial fiber bale; a displacing device for moving the bale-supporting device into and out of engagement with the initial fiber bale; and a control device for automatically operating the fiber bale depositing device and the displacing device for automatically and sequentially depositing the initial fiber bale, moving the bale-supporting device into engagement with the initial fiber bale, depositing the additional fiber bale into a countersupporting engagement with the initial fiber bale and moving the bale-supporting device out of engagement with the initial fiber bale.

    • A bale opener includes a tower arranged for horizontal travel in a travelling direction along a stationarily supported fiber bale series; a detaching assembly mounted on the tower and projecting laterally therefrom to extend above an upper surface of the bale series; an opening device forming part of the detaching assembly for removing fiber tufts from the upper surface in an oblique plane during travel of the bale opener tower; at least two surface level sensors mounted on the detaching assembly for determining a height level of the upper suface at different locations during the horizontal travel of the bale opener; a path sensor for determining coordinates of the different locations; and a control device for determining the inclination of the upper surface from the height levels of the upper surface at the different locations. The surface level sensors and the path sensor are connected to the control device.

    • A method of processing textile fiber includes the steps of removing fiber tufts from fiber bale tops by a fiber bale opening device by effecting a travel of the opening device back-and-forth above serially arranged fiber bales to execute consecutive opening passes; lowering the opening device prior to each opening pass for adapting the opening device to the height level of the fiber bale tops; introducing the fiber tufts removed by the bale opener into a fiber storage device; conveying the fiber tufts from the fiber storage device to a successive processing station; and varying the duration of the opening passes by varying the travelling speed of the opening device. The travelling speed is varied as a function of a fiber quantity requirement by a fiber processing machine forming part of a fiber processing line and being supplied by fiber, at least indirectly, by the fiber bale opening device.

    • An apparatus and method for removing wrapping material from around a cotton module that results in the unwrapped cotton generally retaining the shape and density of the original cotton module. The apparatus has a bale engaging mechanism which straddles the cotton module on a conveyor surface and a cutting device to cut the wrapping material. The bale engaging mechanism has a moveable support frame, one or more arms on each side of the apparatus that pivot downward and inward from the support frame to position a roller at the lower end of the arms against the cotton module and a frame moving mechanism that moves the support frame, arms and cotton module upward and downward. The wrapping material can be cut as the cotton module is moved into the bale engaging mechanism, after the module is engaged by the rollers or after the module is raised above the conveyor surface.
