    • Adhesive composition comprising starch, dextrine and a polyacrylamide. The composition is carried by water; but, when the composition is applied to a substrate, the water is evaporated to produce a water activatable adhesive. Thus, the composition is suitable for application to a paper backing to form an adhesive tape.Method of preparing the adhesive from a dry polyacrylamide starting material includes the steps of first dissolving the dextrine and dry polyacrylamide in water and allowing the dextrine and polyacrylamide to mix. The starch is then added to that mixture. Preferably, the dextrine and polyacrylamide are mixed for at least a half-hour before the starch is added. To prevent the particles of dextrine and polyacrylamide from agglomerating together, it has been found advantageous to mix the dextrine and polyacrylamide in small batches. This step, however, is not critical.It is also possible to utilize an aqueous solution containing dissolved polyacrylamide, (liquid polyacrylamide) as a starting material. In this embodiment, the dextrine, liquid polyacrylamide and starch are added to water in any order to form the adhesive mixture.

    • A pregummed, remoistenable tape having long open time and short tack time which utilizes adhesive formulations using acid hydrolyzed, derivatized waxy maize starch as a component to replace animal glue in remoistenable pregummed tape formulations. Wet tack strength is equal or better than "all-animal glue" adhesives presently used, especially for short open times. In one embodiment, the major ingredient in the adhesive coating of the pregummed tape comprises waxy maize starch which is first acid-hydrolyzed and then copolymerized with acrylamide monomer using a free radical initiator in an aqueous system.In another second embodiment, acid-hydrolyzed, cyanoethylated waxy maize starch provides the major adhesive ingredient which replaces a substantial portion of the animal glue in the adhesive composition used to coat the pregummed tape. It is also contemplated that substantially all of the animal glue in the new formulation can be replaced for certain applications with a synthetic organic compound such as polyvinyl alcohol.These combination vegetable-animal base adhesives and the vegetable synthetic type adhesives may be used to replace animal glue based adhesives, and provide improved machinability, less odor, easier remoistenability of the pregummed tape under cold room conditions and improved aging.Of the many modified starch combinations tested, on remoistenable pregummed tapes the acid-hydrolyzed, cyanoethylated starch derivative and acid-hydrolyzed, acrylamide-starch graft copolymers performed the best, especially in combination with small amounts of animal glue.

    • Internal fiber bonding laying of surface fuzz or fibers, with accompanying improvement in ancillary properties, e.g., improved surface and bursting strengths and printability, is accomplished by sealing the surface and/or body of paper or paperboard with a flour size in which the flour is present therein as a smooth, stable homogeneous colloidal co-solution, substantially free of undissolved fiber, of both the protein and starch fractions of the flour, the protein being present in substantially nondegraded form and the starch being present as a molecular weight reduced starch. The size can be produced by the steps, in either order, of subjecting a corn or other proteinaceous flour slurry to an instantaneous cooking at about 115*-175* C. and reducing the viscosity of the finished size to about 35-70 seconds (Dudley) by subjecting the flour in gelatinized or cooked form to the action of hydrogen peroxide or an enzyme. The resultant sizing material is viscosity stable and can be used to size paper and paperboard with a wet end press, at the breaker stacks, with a size press or water box on the calendar stacks or as an on-themachine coating operation, without the usual build up of scum resulting from separation of protein from the size.

    • A process for preparing and continuously delivering a finished starch-based adhesive composition, containing a gelatinized starch portion and a raw starch protein, to a site of use, such as a corrugating machine. The process includes continuously delivering formula components, including raw starch slurry, water and caustic, to an adjustable metering device by which means the volume of each component is precisely controlled to attain relative proportions of such components corresponding to a desired formula. Controlled volumes of raw starch slurry, water and caustic are delivered to a first mixing zone wherein the ingredients are heated to produce a gelatinized starch mass of relatively stable viscosity. The gelatinized mass is passed to a second mixing zone. A further volume of water is simultaneously forwarded to the second mixing zone. The gelatinized starch and water in the second mixing zone is blended to form a gelatinized starch medium. The gelatinized starch medium is passed from the second mixing to a third mixing zone. Simultaneously, a further volume of raw starch slurry is forwarded to the third mixing zone. The raw starch slurry is commingled with the gelatinized medium so as to intimately combine the two starch fractions - the gelatinized starch becomes a carrier to hold raw starch slurry in suspension thereby forming the finished starch-based adhesive composition. The finished starch-based adhesive is delivered to a container for temporary storage. When necessary there is further adjusting of the volumes through the metering device of one or more of the adhesive components relative to the other volumes thereby altering prior to use the relative proportions in the finished starch-based adhesive composition, to produce a correct formula. The finished starch-based adhesive composition is passed from the container to the site of use.
