    • The device which splices the leaders of webs on successive fresh bobbins to the running webs of expiring bobbins in a cigarette maker receives fresh bobbins from a magazine which discharges fresh bobbins one after the other when the need arises. The discharged fresh bobbin rolls along a downwardly sloping ramp and is arrested by the holder for a blade which is thereupon caused to move in parallelism with the axis of the arrested fresh bobbin so as to sever the outermost layer or layers of convoluted flexible material on the core of such fresh bobbin. The outermost layer is a protective strip which surrounds the outermost convolution of the cigarette paper web. A foraminous belt conveyor is installed below the fresh bobbin which abuts against the holder for the blade and this conveyor cooperates with one or more suction chambers to attract the severed layer or layers as well as the freshly formed leader of the cigarette paper web. The freshly formed leader is transported into the splicing device so that it can be attached to the running web as soon as the supply of cigarette paper on the expiring bobbin is almost exhausted. The fresh bobbin which abuts against the holder for the blade is attached to the spindle of one of several bobbin holders which are indexible with a disk-shaped carrier.

    • Methods for recharging a machine which is used to pack groups of products with the aid of a plastic film wherein the film of a distributor reel is unwound, the film of a full reel is subsequently engaged into an injection device in such a way that said reel becomes a distributor reel in turn, then the empty distributor reel is replaced with a new full reel. While a reel is being distributed, the full reel is placed in the machine and the free end of the film connected to the full reel is maintained in a waiting position; when it is detected that the end of the film of the distributor reel has reached a predetermined position, the advance of the film of said reel is halted and the free end of the film connected to the full reel is driven in such a way that it becomes a distributor reel; while the full reel is being distributed, the empty distributor reel is replaced by a new full reel and the free end of the beginning of the film connected to said new reel is maintained, whereupon the previously mentioned cycle is resumed with a new reel when the final extremity of the film of the full reel which is being distributed reaches a predetermined position in the machine.

    • The invention relates to improvements to methods for recharging a machine which is used to pack groups of products (1, 2, 3, 4) with the aid of a plastic film (5; 51; 53) wherein the film (51) of a distributor reel (7) is unwound, the film of a full reel (70) is subsequently engaged into injection means (17) in such a way that said reel (70) becomes a distributor reel in turn, then the empty distributor reel (7) is replaced with a new full reel. According to the invention, while a reel (7) is being distributed, the full reel (70) is placed in the machine and the free end (52) of the film connected to said full reel is maintained in a waiting position; when it is detected that the end of the film of the distributor reel (7) has reached a predetermined position, the advance of the film (7) of said reel is halted and the free end (52) of the film (53) connected to the full reel (70) is driven in such a way that it becomes a distributor reel; while said full reel (70) is being distributed, the empty distributor reel (7) is replaced by a new full reel and the free end of the beginning of the film connected to said new reel is maintained, whereupon the previously mentioned cycle is resumed with a new reel when the final extremity of the film of the full reel (70) which is being distributed reaches a predetermined position in the machine.

    • An automatic tape splicer includes a block of metal that has a channel journalled into it to receive tape from first and second rolls. Adjacent to and protruding into the channel are first and second pinch rollers. Each roll of tape to be spliced includes a leading end and a trailing end. The leading end includes a portion having adhesive applied to one side which may be covered by release paper. The trailing end includes a reinforced portion which is thicker than the normal thickness of the tape. The channel is dimensioned such that the pinch rollers will press the trailing end of the tape against an adhesive-exposed leading end of the second roll of tape, splicing the two rolls together as the trailing end feeds through the channel engaging the sticky leading end of the second roll.
