    • A device for holding a log for sawing comprises a post having fixed thereto a pair of downwardly pointed spikes carried by a plate. A sleeve is slidable on the post and carries four upwardly pointed spikes on a plate and displaced a greater distance from the post 1 than are the spikes fixed to the post. The log is thus held in cantilevered fashion and the weight of the log causes the sleeve to jam in position against the post. The sleeve is provided with a spring to stop is sliding down the post when not in use. The post may be held in a sleeve hammered into the ground or it may be provided with a base so the device is free-standing.

    • Embodiments of the present invention provide a jaw apparatus that is tied to a stable anchor (e.g., a vehicle) and that holds wood off the ground in a stable manner to enable cutting by a user. The jaw apparatus can include a main shaft that defines a shaft axis. The main shaft can have a first end and a second end. The first end of the main shaft can have an insertion portion that is configured to be inserted into a trailer-hitch-like receptacle (e.g., a trailer hitch receptacle). The jaw apparatus can include an indentation structure coupled to the second end of the main shaft. The indentation structure can form an indentation, which can have interior surfaces. The interior surfaces can extend upwardly and away from the main shaft. The interior surfaces can be configured to exert upward force on the piece of wood when received in the jaw apparatus. The jaw apparatus can include one or more bars coupled to the main shaft at a bar connection location between the first and second ends of the main shaft. Each of the one or more bars can extend upwardly and away from the main shaft in a direction toward the second end of the main shaft. Each of the one or more bars can have a downward facing surface configured to exert downward force on the piece of wood when received in the jaw apparatus.

    • An apparatus for holding firewood and dimension lumber during cutting includes an upright member having a generally triangular shaped plate attached near one end thereof, the plate includes a plurality of steps, each of the plurality of steps having a generally V-shaped portion facing downwards that is attached thereto. The V-shaped portions engage the butt end of any diameter of a log of sufficient size that is placed on the holder and prevents the butt end from becoming dislodged. A serrated plate is attached under the triangular shaped plate that is useful for securing the butt end of small logs and of dimension lumber. A first end of a longitudinal member is attached to the upright member under the serrated plate and extends away from the upright member and is generally perpendicular with respect thereto. A generally rectangular plate having a trough at the top is attached at a second end of the longitudinal member and is useful for the cantilevered placement of logs for cutting thereon. A second longitudinal member is provided at a second end of the upright member that is adapted for placing the holder into a receiver hitch of a vehicle during use. According to a modification the second longitudinal member is eliminated and a base assembly is provided which allows placement of the holder upon the ground surface during use.

The chain guide and the guided return part are both outside and below the object during the whole of the cutting operation, while the upper cutting portion of the chain runs straight between the end points of the curved portion of the chain guide.Towards the end of the cutting operation, the part of the object not yet sawn through is subjected solely to short-duration tensional stress and substantially not to bending stress, whereby splitting the material is avoided.
