    • An assembly for treating pulp and the like in a vessel by directing an axial flow of bleaching or washing liquid or the like through the pulp, and immediately thereafter removing the spent liquid from the pulp by a straining assembly. The straining assembly includes a plurality of concentric ring-like screens having radially spaced perforated or slotted side plates, a plurality of concentric ring-like headers corresponding in number to the screens and connected to the screens in end-to-end fluid communicating relationship, and a plurality of radially extending axially reciprocal arms. Liquid passing through the screens flows through the headers and through the arms out of the vessel under the influence of pressure differential. The headers are connected to the arms and the arms are connected to the headers by structures which provide bending and torsional rigidity of the straining assembly, and which minimize the adverse effects of non-synchronous operation of actuators for axially moving the straining assembly. Uniformity of pulp treatment is maximized by provision of the headers.

    • A method and apparatus for the thickening of a suspension of comminuted fiber material and liquid. A reciprocal screen assembly having a variable volume interior chamber is mounted for movement along the axis of a container through which suspension to be dewatered flows. Mechanical apparatus, such as a hydraulic cylinder actuated rod, moves the screen assembly in either the direction of flow of suspension in the container, or in the direction opposite thereto, and the screen assembly is relatively rotatable with respect to the container. During movement of the screen assembly in the direction of flow of the suspension (at about the same velocity as the suspension flow), liquid passes through the screen assembly into the interior chamber, and is expelled from the container. The screen assembly is moved more quickly in the direction opposite to the direction of suspension flow, and the variable volume of the interior chamber thereof decreases quickly so that backflushing of the screen assembly is effected. Even during backflushing, however, liquid is continuously moved from the interior screen chamber to be expelled from the container. Fins mounted on the screen assembly effect relative rotational movement of the screen assembly with respect to the container (to facilitate cleaning of the screen assembly) during movement in the direction opposite to the direction of suspension flow.

    • A screen installation for separating solid materials from liquid streams in pipe lines, in which a screen basket is so arranged that its closed end is directed opposite the flow and its open end is connected with the pipe line wall; at least one tangentially outwardly directed flushing medium inlet opening and flushing medium outlet opening each are arranged near the screen base whereby the outlet opening is disposed nearer the screen base while the inlet opening is arranged in another plane disposed upstream of the plane of the outlet opening, as viewed in the direction of the main stream, so that a flushing medium separation channel is formed between the two openings.
