    • A multiple component material, in particular a filler particle containing implantation material is produced and used to anchor prothesis components in bones, to strengthen bones, as dowel for bone screws and as implants for anchoring screws. The polymer component of the disclosed implantation material is preferably based on an acrylate or polymethacrylate basis, or on an acrylate and methacrylate copolymer or a mixture thereof. The polymer component encloses the filler particles at least in part. Preferably, the filler particles are 5 to 15 .mu.m in size and have at least 50% void volume. The multiple component material is stored in a dry, stable particulate form ready for use by mixing with monomer liquid.

    • One embodiment of the invention comprises a differential composite (160) in which bone cement everywhere or substantially everywhere contains at least some non-zero volume fraction of particles (172, 174), and in which the local volume fraction of particles (172, 174) may vary from place (162) to place (164) in the composite (160) in a controlled manner. The variation may be by identifiable region (162, 164) or may be in the form of a gradient of the local volume fraction of particles (172, 174). In at least some places (164), the local volume fraction of particles (174) may be such that the particles (174) act as crack arrestors. Close to the interface with natural bone (162), the local volume fraction of particles (172) may be greater. In at least some places (162) adjoining natural bone (140), the local volume fraction of particles (172) may be such as to allow bone ingrowth into appropriate region(s) of the composite (160), resulting in improved interfacial shear strength. Methods and apparatuses for producing and delivering the composite (160) are also disclosed, which may include use of an introducer (208) and an expandable basket-type device (48).

An exemplary water miscible polymer is a naturally existing, or synthetically prepared, salt form of the carbohydrate alginic acid, such as sodium alginate, or alginic acid itself.
