    • A dental cartridge for dispensing a dental material having a body portion made of a material transparent to at least a portion of the visible light spectrum and opaque to the actinic light of the dental material contained therein. Also, a dental cartridge having a body portion formed from a toroidal segment and a coaxial nozzle attached thereto. The dental cartridges are used in a dental syringe for application of the dental material to a patient. Several embodiments provide various discharge end configurations, including hemispherical, conical frustum, and flat. Additionally, dosing indicia are placed on the body portion of the dental cartridge, permitting the dentist to fill the dental cartridge with a predetermined volume of dental material. A specially configured piston having an appendage thereon is used in combination with the dental cartridge for extruding substantially all of the costly dental material therein.

    • A method and apparatus for delivery of highly filled, thixotropic resin sealant to tooth surfaces. The apparatus includes a dispenser for holding a quantity of the sealant material and a delivery tip having adjustable bristles at one end. The bristles are slidably secured in a spiral passageway formed by a helical ridge inside the delivery tip, thereby allowing the sealant material to be continuously applied without the need to stop the procedure and rewet the applicator. The applicator permits accurate control of the amount of sealant material applied to the surface. In this way, the surface receives neither an excessive nor an insufficient amount of the sealant material. Moreover, the bristles may be pushed in to permit the sealant material to be applied to a small, irregular surface, such as pits and fissures, or pulled out to permit the bristles to fan out for application to broad surface areas. Delivery of highly filled, relatively viscous, thixotropic sealant materials is made possible by providing the spiral passageway around the bristles so that the coating material does not have to flow through the bristles, and due to sheer thinning caused by forcing the thixotropic material through the spiral passageway.

    • For free-hand use by a dentist, there is provided a cylinder containing tooth filling material urged out of the cylinder by spring pressure, sometimes augmented by thumb pressure against the end of a piston rod in the cylinder. Flow of the material out of the cylinder through a removable and replaceable flexible curved nozzle is under control of a valve located to be readily manipulated between open and closed positions by the same hand of the dentist. Preferably the filling material is in a discrete capsule containing enough filling material for several teeth and easily placed in and removed from the cylinder.

    • A dental appliance for introducing a filler material into a tooth cavity comprises a support, a filler pipe, a filler expelling element, and a removable magazine which accommodates a filler, and a mechanical transmission which couples the filler expelling element and the magazine expelling element with one another to provide coordination of their movements and includes a toothed rack connected with the magazine expelling element, an expelling lever which is turnably connected with a support and has a free end engaging in the toothed rack and expelling button actuatable by a finger and connected with the filler expelling element, and a projection, the lever being arranged so that during the working stroke it displaces with the toothed rack via the expelling button and the projection in direction toward the filler pipe before a front end of the filler expelling element reaches an end of the opening of the magazine into the filler pipe, a toothed pinion supported in the support, a rotary element connected with the toothed pinion for joint rotation therewith and having a first projection portion for displacing the expelling lever and thereby the toothed rack of the magazine expelling element and a second projection portion for displacing the filler expelling element, a toothed segment supported in the support and engaging with the toothed pinion, the expelling button being formed as a two-arm rotary slider turnably supported in the support and having one arm which is provided with a finger contact portion and extends beyond the support and another arm which has an end articulately engaging the toothed segment.

    • An apparatus which can be used for exposing a light-curable dental composition to a curing light to harden the composition while the composition is applied to teeth so that the exposure of dentists' or technicians' eyes to such light is minimized. The apparatus has an opaque cylindrical receptacle which is open at its top and bottom. The bottom opening allows the receptacle to pick up and discharge the dental composition. The working end of an elongated plunger, having a clear plastic core and an opaque surface coating, extends through the top opening of the receptacle, and the other end of the plunger is connected to a source of curing light. The working end of the plunger can irradiate the dental composition within the receptacle with the curing light and can also be moved within the receptacle to force the irradiated dental composition outward of the bottom opening in the receptacle onto a tooth.

    • The specification discloses an amalgam carrier for pushing amalgams into previously difficultly accessed tooth cavities such as in distal and lingual surfaces. The carrier includes an elongated handle, a support arm extending laterally of the handle, and a release mechanism mounted on the support arm and defining an amalgam bore opening away from the support arm in a direction generally common with the handle. The release mechanism is actuable in the vicinity of the support arm whereby the carrier can be firmly grasped about said handle and the release mechanism actuated by the user's thumb. Also disclosed is a method of pushing an amalgam utilizing the amalgam carrier of the present invention.
