    • 517,907. Weighing apparatus. TOLEDO SCALE MANUFACTURING CO. Sept. 2, 1938, No. 25729. Convention date, Nov 12, 1937. [Class 143] In a weighing scale of the predetermined weight type having a pair of load supports pivotally carried by an even-armed lever which is pivoted on a fixed axis in the frame, one of the load supports is connected, by a pair of opposed resisting elements to a pointer pivoted on. a fixed axis in the frame. The pointer 37 is mounted on a ball bearing 35 carried by a. clamp 34 adjustable on a vertical rod 32 carrying the indicating chart 38. The vertical rod is supported by a plate projecting from the frame. Attached to the pointer are two arms 40 each secured to the centre of a spiral spring 41. The outer coils of the springs are clamped between a pair of members 46 carried by an L-shaped bracket 52 mounted on an arm 53 extending from the loading box 17 of the counterpoise platter spider 16. The L-shaped bracket 52 may be adjusted towards or away from the spiral springs to vary the resistance of the springs. By adjusting the outer coils of the springs in the. clamp 46 the' extent of throw of the pointer to one side or the other of the zero may be varied. The platters 19 have downwardly depending flanges to exclude dirt. An external notched beam with an adjustable poise weight is connected to the even-armed lever 7 'by cranked brackets passing between the frame 1 and the depending flanges of the platters. The upper end of the indicator housing 61 may be provided with a carrying handle. In a modification the pointer may be arranged to oscillate transversely instead of longitudinally of the apparatus. In a further modification, the pointer is located at one end of the apparatus, the position of the platter spider and arm 53 being reversed and the frame 1 being extended to support th indicator housing. Specification 495,134 is referred to.

    • 445,161. Weighing-apparatus. TOLEDO SCALE MANUFACTURING CO., Toledo, Ohio, U.S.A. July 9, 1935, No. 19600. Convention date, Feb. 15. [Class 143] Computing - apparatus ; pendulum - weight apparatus.-Relates to a weighing scale of the type having weighing mechanism and a cylindrical indicating chart located within a housing provided with openings on opposite sides through which the chart is visible and having a goods platter lying above the housing. The invention consists in providing the scale with an horizontally extending cylindrical chart located substantially centrally within a boxlike casing, and a lever having branches occupying the spaces between the chart and the lower longitudinal corners of the casing. The platter 34 is supported on a C-shaped frame 25, Fig. III, passing partly round the drum chart 61 and supported on knife-edge bearings carried by branch arms of a lever 9, Fig. IV, fulcrumed on knife-edge bearings 6. The branch arms are situated in the spaces between the chart drum and the lower longitudinal corners of the casing. A pull-and-push link 110 is connected to the upper portion of the C-shaped frame. One branch arm of the lever 9 is extended and connected by a stirrup 47 to a rolling-sector pendulum mechanism' actuating the drum chart by means of a rack 53. A dashpot 66 inserted through a hole in the base is connected to the lever. At the salesman's side of the machine the chart indications are read through a system of lenses and lens cells 89, Fig. III, arranged as described in Specification 395,268. This system is carried on rods 75, 76 rotatable about an axis coinciding with the reading line 65 and may be tilted up and down by actuating a finger knob 77 so as to facilitate reading of the chart by persons of different heights. The lateral movement of the lens system along the bars 75, 76 to change the range of the readings is effected by rotating a second finger knob 90 connected to an actuating lever 95. During the lateral movement in one direction a pair of shutters are closed automatically to cover the vacant space left at one end of the chart. At the customer's side of the machine a frusto-pyramidal corridor 112 is provided through which the weight indicia may be viewed, a lamp 114 illuminating the readings. The mechanism is enclosed in a box-like casing of synthetic plastic material. Bearings.-The fulcrum knife-edges 8, Fig. VII, of the lever 9 are prevented from leaving their bearings 6 by means of spring-pressed shackles 13 engaging chisel-ended members 11 carried by the lever. Endwise shifting of the knife-edges is prevented by thrust members 26. The bearings 22, 24, Fig. VIII, supporting the C-shaped frame 25 are similarly retained in position by cone-shaped members 29.

    • 474,501. Weighing and other measuring apparatus; specific gravity estimating- apparatus. TOLEDO SCALE MANUFACTURING CO. Nov. 28, 1936, Nos. 32665 and 32666. Convention dates, Nov. 29, 1935 and Oct. 16, 1936. [Class 143] [Also in Groups XIX and XX] In a logarithmic computing device the automatic load-balancing mechanism of a weighing scale or other measuring mechanism is connected to a movable member carrying a logarithmic or modified logarithmic curve to cause the member to move so that the curve moves logarithmically along a row of logarithmicallv arranged indicia on another member which is manually shiftable longitudinally of its row of indecia to correspond with a selected datum. As shown in connection with a weighing scale employing an indicating cylinder 12, Fig. 1, automatically rotated in proportion to the load placed on the scale pan, the indicating cylinder is marked with a logarithmic curve 13. A ribbon 22 is stretched immediately in front of the cylinder from a spring drum 20 to a hand-operated drum 31. The ribbon is divided logarithmically and the divisions are numbered with the antilogarithms. With the ribbon adjusted so that the unit graduation coincides with a fixed pointer 34, a one-lb. weight on the scale pan causes the curve 13 to intersect the graduated edge of the ribbon at its unit graduation. Other loads placed on the scale pan will then be correctly indicated on the ribbon at the intersecting points of the curve and ribbon. Similarly by other appropriate settings of the ribbon, the weight may be indicated in other standards of weight, or in pints or other units of volume, or indicate the yards in a bolt of cloth. The specific gravity of a liquid may be determined by placing on the scale platform two vessels containing the liquid and water respectively and counterbalancing these by means of a tare poise. A solid is now suspended in the water and the ribbon 22 is adjusted until its unit graduation is intersected by the curve 13. The same solid is suspended in the liquid to be tested, and the specific gravity of the liquid is then indicated by the new point of intersection of the curve and ribbon. The specific gravity of a solid may be ascertained by suspending it in a counterbalanced vessel of water on the platform, adjusting the ribbon until its unit graduation intersects the curve, and then lowering the solid to rest on the bottom of the vessel when the new intersection will indicate the specific gravity. Identical pieces, such as screws, may be counted by placing a small number on the platform, adjusting the ribbon until the same number thereon intersects the curve, and then adding the remaining pieces when the number thereof will be directly indicated on the ribbon at the new intersection. The percentage of the original weight of an article remaining after processing may be ascertained by weighing the article before and after processing, and by making suitable adjustments of the ribbon. A quantity of material on the platform may be divided into any desired number of parts by setting this number on the ribbon to intersect the curve and afterwards removing material so as to bring the point of intersection to the successive graduations. A lamp inside the casing illuminates the graduations and a slidable lens 40 magnifies the indications. In a modified apparatus, the pointer 34 may be adjusted along the viewing opening adjacent to a stationary graduated strip, Fig. X (not shown), to allow values having more than two factors to be indicated, for example, the money value of a quantity of screws at a predetermined price per gross. As applied to the " fan " type of weighing scale, Fig. XI, a modified logarithmic curve 66 is inscribed on the pointer 65, and the logarithmic ribbon 68 is arranged obliquely, the intersecting points of the curve and ribbon being observed through an elongated viewing window 74. Specification 237,437, [Class 143], is referred to.
