    • A sprue gated injected molding system having nozzles with a removable hollow gate insert received in a seat in the forward end of each nozzle to form the gate. Each gage insert has a forward portion with a tapered outer surface which abuts against a matching tapered surface of an opening through to mold to the cavity. The forward portion of the gate insert is resilient which ensures extremely good contact between them under bearing pressure due to thermal expansion of the nozzle. Thus optimum uniform heat transfer is provided between the gate insert and the cooled mold. The gate insert has a circumferential removal flange to facilitate it being pryed out of the seat if replacement is required. In an alternate embodiment an elongated torpedo is seated centrally in the melt bore of each nozzle. The torpedo has an outer retaining ring and a number of radially extending tapered fins which form melt flow channels between them. The torpedo is mounted with the retaining ring secured in the seat in the forward end of the nozzle by the gate insert and a pointed tip formed by the fins extending to provide additional heat in or adjacent the gate. The torpedo has pointed tips at opposite ends and is reversible for different dimensioned applications.

    • A number of heated injection molding nozzles are mounted along the side surface of a melt conveying manifold. In one embodiment of the invention, a connector collar having a tapered flange portion is bolted to the side surface of the manifold to provide each melt bore outlet. Each nozzle has a matching flange portion with a melt bore inlet extending laterally from a side surface. The nozzle is mounted on the manifold by securing the flange portions together by bolting a wedge clamp having two halves over the aligned flange portions. This accurately aligns the inlet with the outlet and allows the nozzle to be rotated to a particular angular position. In another embodiment, a melt conduit member is mounted between the manifold and each nozzle. The melt conduit member is clamped to the manifold after being rotated to a desired angular position about a first axis. A nozzle is clamped to the melt conduit member after being rotated to a desired angular position about a second axis which is substantially perpendicular to the first axis. Thus, each nozzle can be located with any desired angular orientation without the melt flowing through an acute angle bend.

    • This invention relates to a method of providing an injection molding heated nozzle with an improved electrical terminal. A plug is seated in a radial opening in the collar portion with heating element extending through it and the rear end of the heating element projecting a minimum distance from the front surface of the plug. The insulation and casing are stripped from the projecting portion and the exposed resistance wire is welded to a flat surface on a larger diameter threaded conductive stud. A sleeve having a threaded and broached inner surface is mounted over the stud with the outer end of the stud projecting beyond the outer end of the sleeve. The plug and sleeve are integrally brazed in place during the brazing step forming the rest of the nozzle. A liquid ceramic insulating material is poured to fill the space between the stud and the surrounding sleeve. A ceramic insulating washer and a steel washer are mounted on the projecting outer end of the threaded stud, before receiving the electrical lead which is held in place by a nut. The ceramic material bonds to the threads and grooves on the inner surface of the sleeve and to the stud and secures it against the applicaiton of lateral and axial forces, as well as torque and considerably reduces failure of the resistance wire.

    • This invention relates to an improved injection molding filter assembly to be located between the molding machine and the mold. The assembly has an elongated inner torpedo member with a generally cylindrical outer surface which is centrally located in a passage through a hollow outer member. The passage is defined by a generally cylindrical inner wall which is interrupted by an even number of inwardly opening longitudinally extending channels. Inlet channels extending from the inlet of the assembly and dead ending adjacent the outlet alternate with outlet channels extending from the outlet of the assembly and dead ending adjacent the inlet. Filtering apertures are formed between the outer surface of the torpedo member and the lands between the inlet and outlet channels through which the melt flows from the inlet channels to the outlet channels. A single elongated aperture may be formed at each land or a plurality of smaller apertures may be formed by providing alternating laterally extending ridges and grooves on the inner surfaces of the lands and/or on the outer surface of the torpedo member. Contaminants which are too large to pass through the filtering apertures accumulate adjacent the dead ends of the inlet channels. The outer member has a collar portion which may be detached to take out the torpedo member for periodic removal of accumulated contaminants. The location of the channels in the outer member provides improved heat flow characteristics and allows the width of the filtering slits to be quickly and easily changed by substituting a relatively inexpensive torpedo member having a different diameter.
