    • The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for allocating bits in a statistical multiplexing system (stat mux). A statistical multiplexer (stat mux) (600) accommodates both compressed and uncompressed video programs using transcoding (640, 650) and encoding (620, 630), respectively. Hierarchical dynamic bit allocation is used, starting from a super GOP level (700, 702, 704, 800, 900), then to a super frame level (902; 904; 908; 909), and then to the regular (individual) frame level (910, 920, 930, 990; 912, 922, 932, 992; 916, 926, 936, 996; 918, 928, 938, 998). At each level, a target number of bits (T1, T2, TL-1, TL) is determined. A target number of bits for a super frame, which is a collection of frames across all channels at a given frame instance (t1, 2t1, 3t1...), is adaptive and is able to address any combination of picture types. Frames of the same picture type for a program are generally assigned the same (or similar) number of bits. Relative program quality can be controlled using a program priority weighting factor (w). Additionally, constraints on target bit rates and minimum and maximum bit rates are provided.

The method receives the audio/video stream, and monitors it to detect an advertisement insertion notification for the audio/video stream. The advertisement insertion notification references an advertisement insertion point at a position in the audio/video stream. The method determines a disposition of the audio/video stream at the position, and examines at least one advertisement stream to identify a matching advertisement stream having an advertisement disposition that agrees with the disposition of the audio/video stream at the position. The method inserts the matching advertisement stream into the audio/video stream at the position.

A growing trend and implementation of home gateways is to provide a centralized data entrance point to end user home. Behavioral information may be compiled from each individual device in the home network, and the home network gateway device determines advertisements to insert specifically to each device based on the entirety of the behavioral information compiled from within the home network. The advertisements provided to individual users within the home network may be determined by the home network gateway device, transparent to entities outside the home network. For example, a headend that delivers content to a home network may not know how many devices are connected to a home network gateway device, the type of devices connected, or which devices are receiving content.

    • In one embodiment, a method for decoding a video bitstream comprises the steps of: (a) receiving a video bitstream; (b) deriving processed video data from the bitstream; (c) partitioning the processed video data into blocks, wherein each of the blocks is equal to or smaller than a picture; (d) deriving an SAO type from the video bitstream for each of the blocks, wherein the SAO type is associated with a specific nonbiased coding scheme; (e) determining an SAO sub-class associated with the SAO type for each of the pixels in each of the blocks; (f) deriving intensity offset from the video bitstream for the sub-class associated with the SAO type; and (g) applying SAO compensation to each of the pixels in a processed video block, wherein the SAO compensation is based on the intensity offset of step (f).
