    • A method and an apparatus as described for informing a system user of the remaining battery terminal voltage as the battery approaches the fully discharged condition. One horizontal fuel gauge icon (11) for each battery is displayed on the host system display panel (6). The fuel gauge is displayed as two overlapping rectangles which are left justified. The first layer is a solid outline, always the same width, representing the full charge capacity of the battery. The second layer is a filled-in rectangle representing the present (actual) charge capacity as a percentage of the full charge capacity in a charge depletion mode and representing the battery terminal voltage in a voltage mode. The fuel gauging switches from the charge depletion mode to the voltage mode is response to detection of a battery terminal voltage threshold greater than a shutdown voltage threshold.

    • A method and an apparatus for limiting the peak power consumed by a thermal recorder (44) connected to portable battery-powered equipment. The battery-powered equipment is designed with a filter (58) and an electronic circuit breaker (56). A circuit breaker current sense resistor (60) and an output capacitor (62) form an RC filter and provide a large current reservoir for the thermal recorder which averages the peak current demands seen at the circuit input. The electronic circuit breaker provides a current limit function and will not allow a current greater than a predetermined amperage level to be drawn. The thermal recorder has a CPU which provides pulses to a thermal print head in dependence on data incorporated in a pulse-width limit table. The values in the pulse-width limit table can be substituted for calculated pulse widths that would produce peak currents large enough to trip the circuit breaker.

    • A cable management and data acquisition method and apparatus to store system data and data from activity sensors when the sensors are disconnected from a monitoring system. The apparatus (100, 102) includes a housing (110, 146), a first connection port (120, 122, 160, 162, 164) operable to receive information from one or more activity sensors, a device interface (105, 141) coupled to the first connection port, a non-volatile memory (104, 140) coupled to the device interface; and an output port (114, 150) coupled to the device interface. The cable management and data acquisition apparatus may also include a digital-to-analog converter (106, 142) to convert analog signals from sensors to digital signals. Preferably, the device interface (105, 141) is an application specific integrated circuit ("ASIC") that communicates with a signal processor in the monitoring processor. The signal processor responds to commands or messages from the monitoring processor and reads data from and writes data to the memory in the cable management and data acquisition apparatus through the ASIC. The cable management and data acquisition apparatus prevents the loss of patient data when a patient monitoring system is disconnected from the activity sensors attached to a patient, such as might occur when a patient is moved from one location to another. Data stored in the memory of the apparatus can be readily retrieved when the patient arrives to the new location so as to maintain a record of identification data and permit the tracking of trends.
