    • A noise reduction device 10 for use in a fluid flow system comprises a central section 12 and an outer annular section 14. The outer annular section 14 is designed to reduce the velocity of an annular fluid flow relative to a central core fluid flow. The central section 12 of the device has a plurality of apertures 14, while the annular section has upstream apertures 18 communicating with a pressure reduction chamber 20 and downstream apertures 22. The upstream apertures 18 of the annular section 14 are smaller than, and off set from, the downstream apertures 22 of the annular section 14 to increase the pressure reduction and further reduce the velocity of the fluid flow in the annular section 14. A method is also described for reducing noise transmissions from a piping system wherein the fluid flow through the piping system is separated into an annular fluid flow and a core fluid flow, and the velocity of the annular fluid flow is reduced relative to the core fluid flow.
