    • A pressure pad is provided for bottom sealing of a gable carton. The pressure pad cooperates with a mandrel which is urged into an opened-top gable carton for sealing the carton bottom. The pressure pad is provided with a sealing bar matrix which is disposed thereon to register with at least selected raw edges of paperboard material on the carton bottom. Each sealing bar functions to compress the fibrous paperboard material from which the carton is formed to render the raw edges less likely to absorb liquids that may be wicked from the raw edges to other locations in the carton. The carton formed by the pressure pad is characterized by reduced thickness raw edges adjacent the bottom.

    • A gable top carton is provided with a flat top wall to facilitate stacking of the carton during storage and transportation. The carton is formed from a single blank of paperboard material provided with an array of score lines to facilitate the folding of various panels formed thereon into the erected carton. The top wall of the flat topped carton includes arrays of perforations disposed therein to define an integral tear strip that is selectively separable from the remainder of the carton. Removal of the tear strip enables panels of the top wall to be rotated upwardly and away from one another to define a unitary pour spout. The pour spout may be repeatedly closed and reopened to provide access to the pourable material as needed.

    • A blank for forming a gable top carton is provided along with the carton formed therefrom. The blank comprises first through fourth side panels and a side glue panel consecutively articulated to one another along parallel fold lines for defining the side walls of the gable top carton to be formed from the blank. Top and bottom panels are articulated to the opposed ends of the respective side panels and glue panel. The blank further comprises a skived flap extending entirely along one edge of the blank and adjacent the glue panel and the top and bottom panels articulated to the glue panel. The skived flap is defined by a rabbeted portion extending into the exterior surface of the blank, and is appropriately dimensioned to enable the skived flap to be folded over onto the exterior surface of the blank along the entire length of the edge. The skived flap can be adhered in face-to-face contact with the exterior surface of the blank to ensure that the liquid stored in the gable top carton formed from the blank does not directly contact the edge of the paperboard material, thereby preventing wicking of liquid through the paperboard material.

    • An apparatus and method for dewatering sludges and the like as part of landfill operations by electrokinetic techniques including placing anode and cathode electrode modules in contact with the sludge and applying electrical energy to the electrodes to establish an electric field in the sludge. Charged particles within the sludge, including macro-molecules, colloids, and suspended particles, electrophoretically migrate to the oppositely charged counter electrode and consolidate. A filtration media located at one of the electrodes permits the electro-osmotic removal of water from the sludge to encourage solids densification. The electrical energy applied to the electrodes is a chopped, time-varying, intermittent unidirectional current having a rapid rise edge which provides dewatering results comparable to prior methods that used direct current or full AC current but at substantially reduced energy consumption to provide more economical dewatering. Presently preferred optimum conditions for practicing the invention are also disclosed, including means for applying the techniques of the disclosure to a continuous dewatering method and an apparatus for practicing that method. The application of the electrokinetic techniques to other processes such as electrodialysis, including electrolysis (using a membrane or bipolar membrane), desalinization or metathesis; and electrowinning, including electroplating; and other electrophoretic processes is suggested.

    • An ultrafiltration system has a plurality of filter modules coupled in a parallel arrangement. The flow rate at the output of each filter module is detected. When the flow rate of a given module falls below a threshold value, that module is disconnected from the ultrafiltration system and automatically coupled into a regeneration circuit so that the filter module can be cleaned. Once regenerated, the filter module is recoupled into the ultrafiltration system. If the regeneration circuit is already in use when a filter module is detected to be in need of regeneration, that module is placed in a queue for regeneration once the regeneration circuit is free, and all other modules previously placed in queue have been regenerated. While awaiting regeneration, the filter modules are kept in service in the ultrafiltration system.
