摘要： The method for operating a clutch (7) and brake associated with a torque converter (2) to change from forward to reverse comprises determining if the forwards speed is the same as or below the desired reverse speed. If so, a retarder (9) is operated and a clutch between an impeller (3) and the drive shaft (13) is let out. The rpm of the engine is reduced to save fuel then, shortly before the vehicle is stationary, is raised again to produce a low turbine torque. The impeller is then released and the clutch let in and the vehicle braked until it is stationary. The rpm of the engine is then raised so that the vehicle begins to move in reverse. An independent claim is included for a transmission system for use in the method.

In order to obtain a multi-ratio reversing gear (1) of compact construction, especially one which is axially short, there is a single clutch (19, 20, 21, 29, 31 and 41), an idler gear and up to two fixed gears on each layshaft. The pinions of the reversing gear form a set of drive wheels (12), a set of distribution wheels (35) and a driven gear system (34). With the same structure in principle it is possible to provide different gear variants with differing numbers of gears and axial differences. An output shaft (7) of the transmission (3) is attached to a joint shaft (9) by a joint (8). Another joint (10) transmits the drive from the joint shaft (9) to an input shaft (11) of a differential transmission (4). In order to allow the joint shaft (9) to have a W-configuration, the drive motor (2) and the transmission (3) are mounted so that they can pivot about the axle (6). All divergences existing in a longitudinal direction of the drive train (1) immediately produce large angles of inflection in the joints. Irregularities in the drive train are hereby avoided. In addition to reducing the load on the joints, the generation of disagreeable noises is avoided. The invention is particularly used in utility vehicles such as employed in the construction industry and in agriculture.
