    • According to one embodiment, a head gimbal assembly includes a magnetic head for perpendicular, a suspension supporting the magnetic head, and a heating module configured to locally heat a recording area of the recording medium. A head section of the magnetic head includes a magnetic core including a main pole and a return pole forming a magnetic circuit in conjunction with the main pole, a coil configured to excite magnetic flux in the magnetic circuit, and a thermal conductor having thermal conductivity higher than thermal conductivity of the recording medium and including a heat absorbing portion configured to remove heat from the recording medium, and a contact portion configured to contact airflow produced, as the recording medium rotates, at a position other than a facing surface of a slider opposed to the recording medium and radiate heat.

    • According to one embodiment, a magnetic head includes a main pole configured to apply a recording magnetic field, a return pole opposed to a trailing side of the main pole across a write gap and configured to return magnetic flux from the main pole, a coil configured to excite magnetic flux in the main pole, a spin-torque oscillator located between respective facing surfaces of the return pole and an end portion of the main pole on the recording-medium side and configured to produce a high-frequency magnetic field, a current source configured to apply current to the spin-torque oscillator through the return and main poles, and a nonmagnetic layer provided in at least one of the poles and extending from a facing surface of the at least one of the poles, which faces the spin-torque oscillator, in a direction across the facing surface.

    • According to one embodiment, a perpendicular magnetic recording apparatus includes a write head including a main pole, a return pole and an exciting coil, and a medium having a soft underlayer and a perpendicular recording layer on a substrate, in which the main pole has a length P in a down-track direction longer than a length T in a cross-track direction at a trailing edge, and has a leading edge recessed from a trailing edge on an air-bearing surface, and in which a gap G between the main pole and the return pole is smaller than twice a distance S between the air-bearing surface of the write head and a surface of the soft underlayer of the medium.
