    • Minimum-memory-implementation is available with any depth and period in DSL interleaving/deinterleaving, always allowing the minimum amount of memory to be used in both transmitter and receiver without loss of performance or of basic triangular structure, even if the interleaver/deinterleaver parameters change dynamically. A novel cell-scheduling process ensures availability of the minimum amount of memory (or any other desired memory usage) to implement an image of the perfect triangle and works for any co-prime depth and interleaver period. Minimal memory use may be further characterized by a simple off-line method that determines an addressing order for each of the memory cells in a minimum-memory (or other) implementation of an interleaver/deinterleaver according to the invention. Time variation of interleaver depth in operation can be accommodated easily with absolute minimum memory requirement at all time instants.

    • Methods, apparatus and systems for dynamically controlling a digital communication system, such as a DSL system, collect information about digital communication lines in the system and adaptively and/or dynamically determine line and signal characteristics of the digital communication lines, including interference effects. Based on the determined characteristics and the desired performance parameters, operation of the digital communication lines is adjusted to improve or otherwise control the performance of the system. The collection and processing of information may be performed by a party that is not a user in the system. This independent party also may control operational characteristics and parameters of the system. The invention can be used to eliminate or reduce signal interference such as crosstalk that can be induced on communication lines in systems such as DSL systems. Specific iterative power allocation and vectored transmission techniques and apparatus are disclosed.

    • A semi-distributed method of managing the spectral power over multiple digital subscriber line communication loops (LP1, LP2) is disclosed. A central office (CO) DSL transceiver (10) and a remote terminal (RT) DSL transceiver (15) communicate with customer premises equipment (CPE) (121, 122) over separate twisted-pair wire loops (LP1, LP2) that are in sufficient physical proximity with one another as to suffer from crosstalk. A network management center (NMC) (20) initializes a price parameter, which is used by the CO (10) and RT (15) in independent maximization problems. The CO (10) derives a maximum tolerable power spectral density for the RT (15) that permits the CO (10) to reach a target data rate, and the RT (15) derives an actual power spectral density that maximizes its data rate, each using the price parameter. The NMC (20) compares the actual RT power spectral density to the tolerable RT power spectral density, and adjusts the price parameter accordingly, with the process repeating until convergence. As a result, the RT data rate is maximized to a level that still permits the CO (10) to reach its target data rate, thus maximizing the overall network data rate.

    • The present invention provides, in one embodiment, a method of simplifying filtering with respect to a band plan. The method includes selecting a reflection point relative to the band plan and designating subchannels as unusable within a filterable separation of the reflection point that would otherwise introduce an asymmetry within the filterable separation. The present invention also provides a filtering simplifier for use with a DSL system having a band plan. The filtering simplifier includes a reflection point selector configured to select a reflection point relative to the band plan. The filtering simplifier also includes a subchannel designator coupled to the reflection point selector and configured to designate subchannels as unusable within a filterable separation of the reflection point that would otherwise introduce an asymmetry within the filterable separation.
