    • A light source, particularly suited for surgical and other medical illumination applications, includes an electrodeless lamp assembly, a reflector having the electrodeless lamp assembly mounted therein and high frequency power source for supplying high frequency power to the electrodeless lamp assembly. The electrodeless lamp assembly includes an electrodeless high intensity discharge lamp capsule including a light transmissive discharge envelope enclosing a discharge volume containing a mixture of starting gas and chemical dopant material excitable by high frequency power to a state of luminous emission. The luminous emission has a color rendering index greater than 85 and preferably has a color rendering index greater than 90. The luminous emission preferably has low energy in the spectral range of 800 to 1000 nanometers relative to energy in the visible spectral range. The electrodeless lamp assembly further includes at least one electric field applicator for coupling high frequency power to the lamp capsule.

    • An electrodeless lamp capsule includes a light-transmissive discharge envelope enclosing a discharge volume containing a mixture of starting gas and chemical dopant material excitable by high frequency power to a state of luminous emission, and a lamp stem attached to the discharge envelope. The lamp stem includes a first section having a first cross-sectional area and a second section attached to the discharge envelope. The second section of the lamp stem has a second cross-sectional area that is less than the first cross-sectional area. The lamp stem may be a tube having a longitudinal slot which defines spaced-apart, first and second elements that are attached to the discharge envelope. The first and second elements have a relatively small total cross-sectional area for conducting heat from the discharge envelope and permit secure attachment of the lamp stem to the discharge envelope.

    • A method and apparatus for high speed transmission of data in the solar blind region is disclosed. An ultraviolet source is modulated to permit digital transmission of data. The source includes an electrodeless capsule of UV transmitting material filled with iodine vapor. A means of energizing the iodine vapor into a plasma state is provided by a magnetron, power triode or solid state supply. A circuit to modulated the energizing means is used to impress upon the plasma discharge the encoded data. Filtering means surround the capsule to filter out the plasma background noise. The advantages of the UV communications method and apparatus described are increased pulse rate, faithful conversion of electrically pulsed data into optical pulses with decreased error rate, decreased probability of interception and non-line of sight communication.

    • A method and device for continuously monitoring the distributed high voltage pulses from an ignition coil of an electrical system of an internal combustion engine is disclosed. The device is a transparent enclosure filled with a noble gas at low pressure. The inner wall of the enclosure is coated with a light emitting phosphor and a small amount of mercury is placed within the enclosure. When the device is placed near a high voltage wire, an electric field capacitively couples to and ionizes the gas within the device. The mercury is excited and emits photons of ultraviolet radiation which in turn creates visible light as the ultraviolet radiation excites the phosphor coating. When this device is placed next to a spark plug wire, it will illuminate when there are high voltage pulses in the wire. In a preferred embodiment two or more enclosures are placed near the same wire. The enclosures contain different gas pressures and are excited at different voltages. This gives a quantitative measure of the high voltage pulse in the wire.
