    • A method and an apparatus for easily and reliably removing cut-out pieces cut out from a workpiece by wire-cut electric discharge machining, in which, upon completion of cutting a piece (41) out, a constraining assembly (63) mounted on the distal end of a piston (62) is brought close to the top surface of the piece under the control of a numerical control unit, and machining fluid is upwardly jetted from a lower nozzle (19) toward the bottom surface of the piece, to thereby hold the piece in the workpiece, with the piece kept away from the lower nozzle and prevented from being detached upwardly from the workpiece. While jetting the machining fluid, a worktable is horizontally moved to cause the cut-out piece to move in unison with the workpiece away from the lower nozzle in the horizontal direction. At a moved position where the machining fluid jet normally no longer acts on the bottom surface of the piece, the table movement is stopped and the machining fluid is downwardly jetted from auxiliary nozzles (70) toward the top surface of the piece, to thereby forcibly drop the piece off the workpiece.

    • A wire electrode guide apparatus (1) in a wire-cut electric discharge machine includes a switch valve (80) for supplying pressurized air and preventing the supply of the air to an air pressure-operated actuator (70) for driving a movable piece (40) for three point-support of a wire electrode (3) between the movable piece and a stationary piece. During wire extension, an air supply port (88) of the switch valve is communicated to a switch port (87) thereof through which the pressurized air is supplied to the actuator to move a piston rod (73) of the actuator away from the movable piece to release an urging force acting upon the same, resulting in easy insertion of the wire electrode between the stationary and movable pieces. During electric discharge machining, the switch port is disconnected from the pressurized air supply port to prevent the air supply to the actuator, so that the movable piece is urged by the actuator for wire support. A highly pressurized working fluid injected from a nozzle (51) and penetrating into the actuator through gaps between apparatus components is discharged outside the apparatus through the switch port and a pressure relief port (89) in communication therewith, so that the actuator is prevented from decreasing the urging force acting upon the movable piece to thereby accurately support the wire electrode on a predetermined traveling path.

    • The electric discharge machining apparatus of the wire-cutting type comprises a wire-treating unit (48) movable in the horizonal direction relative to an upper wire guide member (12) between the upper wire guide member and a work table (10) to traverse a wire electrode (W) extending downward from a wire passage (13) of the upper wire guide member. The wire-treating unit has a base block (55) and a movable block (56) that can approach to and separate from the base block to define a slit (60) and a nozzle hole (61) that can be opened and closed between the two blocks. The nozzle hole can be connected to the lower end of the wire passage of the upper wire guide member, and the nozzle hole is constructed so that a spray liquid supplied into the wire passage of the upper wire guide member can be injected into a wire passage (15) of a lower wire guide member (14). The wire-treating unit comprises a wire-detecting device (66) for detecting the end of the wire electrode between the base block and the movable block and wire-cutting means (62) for cutting the wire electrode between the base block and the movable block.
