    • A method and apparatus is disclosed by which communication with a higher degree of accuracy can be achieved with increased easiness. A transmission apparatus transmits base data formed by dividing transmission data and redundant data produced by exclusive OR operation using a coefficient matrix prepared in advance to a reception apparatus. The base data and the redundant data have restoration relating information relating to a restoration process added thereto. The reception apparatus specifies lost base data based on the information added to the received base data and redundant data and aligns the acquired redundant data. The reception apparatus utilizes a coefficient matrix prepared in advance to perform exclusive OR operation to restore the lost base data and produces reception data corresponding to the original transmission data. The apparatus and method can be applied to a communication system.

    • There is disclosed a scanning electron charged-particle beam instrument facilitating a search for a desired field of view on a specimen. Also, a method of observing a specimen image with this instrument is disclosed. In field of view search mode, low-magnification images are gained from plural regions on the specimen. The image signals gained from the regions are sent to corresponding image memories and stored there. At the same time, the X and Y coordinates of the specimen at the low magnification are stored. If the image is rotated, the angular position and the direction are simultaneously stored. The image signals stored in the image memories are supplied to a CRT, and plural specimen images are displayed on the CRT. If a human operator selects a desired one out of the displayed images, a control unit controls a stage control unit according to coordinates read out, driving an X-Y translation stage. The stage is moved to bring a specimen position corresponding to the selected image onto the optical axis of the electron beam.

    • A magnetic recording transfer method for use with the combination of a mother magnetic recording medium and a copy magnetic recording medium of a metal-deposited thin film type each. The two media are overlaid so that the column inclination of one medium will be opposite in direction to that of the other medium. This method comprises the step of externally applying a biased magnetic field to the combination of the media in such a manner that magnetized recordings on the mother medium will be transferred to the copy medium. The easy axis of the mother medium is positioned at an angle of 20.degree..+-.15.degree. with respect to the in-plane direction of the medium. The biased magnetic field is applied to the mother medium at an angle of 110.degree..+-.15.degree. with respect to the in-plane direction of the medium. This makes it possible to enhance the efficiency in transferring magnetic recording of the mother medium, especially the recordings of short wave lengths, and to minimize demagnetization of the mother medium. Furthermore, the ratio of the coercive force H.sub.CM of the mother medium to the coercive force H.sub.CC of the copy medium (H.sub. CM /H.sub.CC) is set to at most 1.5. This improves the magnetic recording transfer output of the copy medium and boosts the efficiency in the magnetic transfer of short wave magnetic recordings.

    • A magnetic tape contact printing apparatus includes a rotational transfer drum for driving a copy tape in intimate contact with a mother tape on which information signals are recorded, these information signals being transferred from the mother tape to the copy tape. The apparatus also includes a sensor for sensing the rotational speed of the rotational transfer drum, a pair of reel discs each mounting a copy tape supply reel and a copy tape take-up reel about which the copy tape is wound, and a pair of reel disc motors for driving the reel discs. A pair of tensioning devices respectively tension the copy tape running between the copy tape supply reel and the rotational transfer drum and between the latter and the copy tape take-up reel. Tension sensors sense the tension applied to the copy tape by the tensioning devices, and a controller drive-controls the reel disc motors on the basis of the tension sensed by the tension sensors and the rotational acceleration of the rotational transfer drum computed from the rotational speed sensed by the drum speed sensor. In accordance with the invention, this enables the tension applied to the tapes at the time of starting and stopping of rotation of the rotational transfer drum to be maintained at a predetermined value.
