    • A method of driving a gray scale and a drive circuit therefor are provided in which the simplification and reduction of the operating speed of a circuit for generating display voltages in a matrix display device are promoted, and low cost and multi-color display of high minuteness are simultaneously realized. The display circuit for generating the display voltages is composed of an image signal processing circuit for dividing an input digital image signal into plural bit groups, a first display voltage generating circuit for generating the display voltages corresponding to the first bit group obtained by the division, a second display voltage generating circuit for generating the display voltages corresponding to the second bit group obtained by the division, and a line-at-a-time timing circuit. The first and second display voltage generating circuits are operated in parallel to combine the outputs thereof with one another, thereby to generate a gray scale displaying voltage.

    • The liquid crystal display device according to this invention comprises: a first substrate having a first polarization layer on a light incident side; a second substrate having a second polarization layer on a light outgoing side; a first birefringent medium disposed between the first polarization layer and the liquid crystal layer; a second birefringent medium disposed between the second polarization layer and the liquid crystal layer; a pixel electrode and a common electrode arranged on one of the first substrate and the second substrate; wherein an absorbing axis of the first polarization layer and an absorbing axis of the second polarization layer form an angle of from 88 degrees to 92 degrees; wherein the liquid crystal layer has a property that an in-plane refractive index anisotropy is induced in the liquid crystal layer by an electric field produced by the pixel electrode and the common electrode.

    • In a liquid crystal apparatus in which a white light of a fluorescent tube corresponding to a linear light source repeats plural times of diffusions and reflections between a reflection sheet and a diffusion plate, and is thereafter input as a back light to a liquid crystal panel corresponding to a display screen, an object of the invention is to make it possible to secure a brightness uniformity even if the liquid crystal apparatus is thinned.
