    • A spherical aberration compensator for compensating for spherical aberration resulting from a thickness deviation of a recording medium. The spherical aberration compensator includes a central compensation which provides a phase distribution that is effective for compensating for spherical aberration resulting from the thickness deviation and a peripheral compensation portion which surrounds the central compensation portion and provides a phase distribution that is effective for reducing a worsening of the spherical aberration caused by axial displacement of an objective lens from the central compensation portion. The spherical aberration compensator effectively relieves an optical pickup having an objective lens of an NA of 0.7 or greater of worsening of the spherical aberration resulting from thickness deviation of the recording medium.

    • A multilayer recording medium that prevents deterioration of a signal characteristic due to a mirror effect that may occur between recording layers and a method of manufacturing the same, the multilayer recording medium having at least two recording layers, wherein a thickness of at least one spacer layer between adjacent recording layers is different from a thickness of the other spacer layers such that a beam focusing on a recording layer is prevented from focusing on another recording layer corresponding to a mirror layer due to reflection. In the multilayer recording medium, a mirror effect is greatly reduced. In addition, the thickness of only a spacer layer exerting the most significant influence on the mirror effect is changed to prevent the deterioration of signal quality due to the mirror effect, and therefore, the structure of a multilayer recording medium is simplified.

    • Provided are an aberration-compensating liquid crystal device, a method of manufacturing the same, an optical pickup including the liquid crystal device, and an optical recording and/or reproducing apparatus employing the optical pickup. The method of manufacturing an aberration-compensating liquid crystal device comprises: positioning a gray scale mask having an absorption rate distribution corresponding to that of aberrations to be corrected on a liquid crystal cell containing a mixture of liquid crystals and monomers injected between a pair of transparent substrates; and irradiating the liquid crystal cell on which the gray scale mask has been positioned with UV light so that the monomers undergo photopolymerization into polymer and phase separation into a polymer-existing region and a liquid crystal-existing region, thereby forming a liquid crystal layer having a phase difference distribution corresponding to that of aberrations to be corrected.

    • An optical pickup device includes a light source to emit light, an objective lens to focus the light on a recording medium to form a light spot, an optical path changer on an optical path between the light source and the objective lens to change the path of incident light, a chromatic aberration correction lens disposed on an optical path between the light source and the objective lens, and a photodetector to receive light which is reflected from the recording medium and is then incident thereon through the optical path changer. The chromatic aberration correction lens corrects a chromatic aberration occurring due to a change in the wavelength and/or due to an increase in a wavelength bandwidth of the light.
