    • The present invention concerns a method and apparatus for building an estimate (Ŷ) of an original image (Y) from a low-quality version (Y l ) of the original image and an epitome (E h ) calculated from an image. The method is characterized in that it comprises: - obtaining (11) a dictionary comprising at least one pair of patches, each pair of patches comprising a patch of the epitome, called a first patch, and a patch of the low-quality version of the original image, called a second patch, a pair of patches being extracted for each patch of the epitome by inplace matching patches from the epitome and those from the low-quality image, - for each patch of the low-quality version of the original image, selecting (12) at least one pair of patches within the dictionary of pairs of patches, each pair of patches being selected according to a criterion involving the patch of the low-quality version of the original image and the second patch of said selected pair of patches, - obtaining (13) a mapping function from said at least one selected pair of patches, and - projecting (14) the patch of the low-quality version of the original image into a final patch (X͂ h ) using the mapping function.

    • A method for performing super-resolution of a single image comprises steps of downsampling (S 1 ) a LR input image by a first factor, separating the LR input image into overlapping blocks (x i ), and for each of the blocks (x i ) searching similar blocks in the downsampled LR images, determining blocks (c i , 1 ,c i , 2 ,c i , 3 ) at corresponding positions in the LR input image, locally optimizing (S 4 ) the blocks by linear approximation to obtain locally optimized patches (z k a ), downsampling (S 5 ) the locally optimized patches (z k a ) by the first factor to obtain a downsampled locally optimized patch (z k a,d ), comparing the downsampled locally optimized patch (z k a,d ) with the input block ( x i 0 ) and optimizing the number and/or weights (w i,1 ,w i,2 ,w i,3 ) of the determined blocks (c i , 1 ,c i , 2 ,c i , 3 ), wherein a locally optimized patch (x 1 i ) is obtained, and repeating the above steps with different sampling factors, wherein for each repetition the locally optimized patch (x 1 i , x 2 i , x 3 i ) of the previous iteration is used as input block.
