    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a placing part from occurring breakage such as cracks, etc., due to lack of strength by fixing a cover and optical fibers on a substrate with an adhesive by using the substrate with beams and a U-shaped cover. SOLUTION: (1) An optical fiber array comprised of a base plate 4, a cover, and optical fiber element fibers 2 by positioning the optical fiber element fibers 2 on the base plate 4 with a positioning member for fixing them with an adhesive, and provided with beam parts 6 on both sides running in common to V- grooves 5 and a mounting part 3. (2) A U-shaped cover has two cross-bar parts opposed to each other. (3) An intersecting part of the U-shaped cross bar and a longitudinal bar is rounded. (4) An under part of the U-shaped longitudinal bar of the cover is chamfered or rounded. (5) The rear end parts of the V-shaped grooves 5 are chamfered or rounded. (6) Each peripheral side corner of the substrate is chamfered or rounded. (7) The cover and the substrate 4 have approximately a same coefficient of linear expansion. (8) The cover is composed of an ultraviolet-ray transmitting material, and the cover and the substrate 4 are bonded for fixing each other with an ultraviolet-ray curing adhesive. (9) The cover is provided with an opening part.

    • PURPOSE:To facilitate hermetic sealing and fixing by providing the surfaces of upper and lower optical fiber plates with grooves which intersect with grooves for positioning optical fibers and penetrate down to both end faces. CONSTITUTION:The groove 8 intersecting with the optical fiber positioning grooves (V grooves) 9 formed on the surface of the lower plate 7 has an effect of assuring solder filling into metallic sleeve and fixing of hermetic sealing by allowing the solder to flow completely into the spacings between the metallic sleeve and the optical fiber plate. This intersecting groove 8 is required to penetrate the optical fiber array plate down to its both end faces in order for the solder to flow completely into the spacing between the metallic sleeve and the optical fiber plate. If the solder does not penetrate down to the middle, the groove exhibits the mere function of accumulating the solder and the effect of the action by the intersecting groove 8 is not expected. The sectional shape of the intersecting groove 8 may be, for example, V, U, recessed and other shapes and the size and shape thereof are not restricted, insofar as the solder is easily passable therebetween.
