摘要： Multi-layered golf balls having an inner core, at least one intermediate layer, and outer cover are provided. The outer cover is made from am ultra-low melt index (ULMI) thermoplastic material using an in-molding coating process that involves applying a thin layer of the material to the interior surface of the cover mold members. Preferably, the ultra-low melt index material is a highly neutralized ionomer ethylene-based copolymer. The cover layers made from these highly neutralized polymers (HNPs) are thin and uniform and provide the golf ball with good playing performance properties. Yet, the cover layers also are tough and provide the golf ball with good impact durability.

The cover includes a thermoplastic inner cover layer having a hardness between 55 and 60 Shore D; an outer cover layer having a hardness between 55 and 60 Shore D; and a stiff intermediate cover layer disposed between the inner and outer cover layers and having a hardness greater than the inner cover layer and the outer cover layer. The inner cover layer is formed from a non-ionomeric composition including a non-ionomeric stiffening polymer and at least one E/Y copolymer or E/X/Y terpolymer, where E is an olefin, Y is a carboxylic acid, and X is a softening comonomer. The intermediate cover layer is formed from a stiff thermoplastic polyurethane or polyurea composition and the cover outer cover layer is formed from a thermoset polyurethane, a polyurea, or a urethane-urea blend.

Also, the untreated core may comprise a geometric center and an untreated outer surface, each having a hardness such that the hardness of the treated outer surface is less than both the hardness of the untreated geometric center and the hardness of the untreated outer surface. A golf ball comprising a core and a cover, wherein the core has an outer surface that is treated with at least one fatty acid such that the outer surface has a hardness ratio (R) of the hardness after treatment (H2) to the hardness before treatment (H1) of less than about 0.95. A golf ball comprising a core and a cover, wherein the core has a geometric center having a hardness (Hg) and the core has an outer surface that is treated with at least one fatty acid or fatty acid salt such that the outer surface has an extrapolated hardness (HE) and an actual hardness (HOS) wherein HE is derived from a five point extrapolation within three quarters of an outer core diameter and HOS is measured on the curved surface of the core, and the cover has a hardness (HC), wherein HC>HE>Hg>HOS.

The golf ball has an inner cover layer with a Shore D hardness of 60 or more, and an outer cover with a Shore D hardness of 55 or less, and more preferably 50 or less. In a particularly preferred form of the invention, the outer cover comprises one or more polyurethane materials. The golf ball of the invention has exceptionally soft feel and high spin rates on short shots of 80 yards or less and, particularly, 40 yards or less, while maintaining good distance and average spin on full shots.
