    • An exhaust assembly (1) adapted for use in a respiratory gas delivery system comprises an exhaust vent, an exhaust gas flow passage, a primary gas flow passage, and a moveable member. The exhaust gas flow passage communicated a flow of exhaust gas from a first end of the exhaust assembly to the exhaust vent. The exhaust vent communicates the exhaust gas from the exhaust gas flow passage to ambient atmosphere. The primary gas flow passage communicates a flow of supply gas from a second end of the exhaust assembly to the first end of the exhaust assembly. The moveable member defines at least a portion of the exhaust gas flow passage and the primary gas flow passage, is operable to isolate the flow of exhaust gas from the flow of supply gas, and is responsive to a pressure differential between the flow of supply gas and the flow of exhaust gas.

    • A system/method for reducing or eliminating application of continuous, repeated, and/or excessive pressure at the contact footprints of a patient interface device and headgear assembly. For example, a patient interface with a plurality of cushions, each producing a different contact footprint when worn by the patient is employed. As another example, a plurality of patient interface devices, each having a cushion that produces a different contact footprint when worn by the patient, are employed. As another example, a patient interface device having a cushion, the configuration/shape of which can be altered such that the contact footprint which it produces is also changed, is employed. The contact footprint to which the patient is exposed is altered after a predetermined time period.

    • A cushion (10, 30, 56) for a patient interface device includes a patient contacting portion (12, 32, 60) and wall portions (18, 20, 22, 24, 34, 66, 68, 70, 72). The wall portions include a plurality of voids (26, 74) and/or orifices therein. The patient contacting portion and the wall portions may be made of a material having a hardness of between 5 and 60 on the Shore 00 scale. Also, the parts of the wall not having the plurality of voids/orifices provided therein may have a cross-sectional thickness of 4 mm or greater. The voids may include a first void provided in an inner side of a first one of the wall portions and a second void provided in an outer side of the first one of the wall portions. The first void and the second void are positioned across from and overlapping one another.
