    • Methods and systems that protect the privacy of signatures on envelopes containing ballots sent through the mail are provided. The envelope for returning ballots by mail includes an electronic optical shutter that covers an opening in the flap of the envelope. The voter signs the back of the envelope in an area that will be visible through the opening in the flap (covered by the optical shutter) when the envelope flap is sealed. The optical shutter is opaque under static conditions, but will become transparent when power is supplied to it. When the envelope flap is sealed and no power is applied to the optical shutter, the voter's signature will be concealed by the optical shutter. Upon receipt at the registrar's office, the optical shutter can be powered, thereby rendering the optical shutter transparent, and the voter's signature can be viewed.

    • A postage printing system, having a computer, a data center and a control system. The computer is in operative communication with a printer for printing a postal indicia on an envelope. The data center is in operative communication with the computer which in turn is located remotely from the data center. The data center includes a plurality of user accounts and a plurality of advertiser accounts where each of the plurality of advertiser accounts includes respective ad data including message data and restriction data. The control system is in operative communication with the data center and the computer and is for: (i) establishing a transaction session between a user of the computer corresponding to one of the plurality of user accounts and the data center; (ii) obtaining recipient address information from the user; and (iii) using the recipient address information and the restriction data from the plurality of advertiser accounts to identify message data available for printing on the envelope in conjunction with the postal indicia.

    • A system and corresponding method for enabling the use of digital postage or, more generally, digital coin.     • A method for auditing postage dispensing transactions at a postal facility includes the steps of: receiving in a secure processor based device a request to dispense an amount of postage; updating, in response to the request, accounting data within the secure processor based device to account for the amount of postage; cryptographically securing the updated accounting data in the secure processor based device; dispensing the amount of postage by generating and applying the cryptographically, secured, updated accounting data to a mailpiece. The method further includes receiving cash value for the amount of postage dispensed; sending from the secure processor based device to an administrative computer a cryptographically secure message including the updated accounting data; obtaining and comparing, at the administrative computer, the updated accounting data from the secure message with the cash value received and previous updated accounting data received from a previous secure message from the secure processor based device, and determining if any inconsistencies exist based on the comparing; and obtaining and analyzing, at a funds management computer, the updated accounting data from the mailpiece and the updated accounting data from the secure message and determining if any inconsistencies exist based on the analyzing. An apparatus incorporates the method.
