    • A technique capable of increasing contrast of a projected and displayed image of a projector. A projector includes an illuminating system that emits illumination light, a liquid crystal light valve for modulating light from the illuminating system according to image information, and a projection system for projecting image light formed on a light emission surface of the liquid crystal light valve. A liquid crystal light valve includes a liquid crystal panel, first and second polarizers disposed on the side of the light incidence surface and on the side of the light emission surface of the liquid crystal panel, and first and second compensating plates disposed between the liquid crystal panel and the first and second polarizers, respectively. By using such a liquid crystal light valve, incidence angle dependency of contrast of image light formed on the light emission surface of the liquid crystal light valve is reduced, whereby it is possible to increase contrast of an image projected and displayed by the projection system.

    • A technique capable of easily manufacturing a projector without deteriorating too much the optical characteristics of the projector. A projector includes an illuminating optical system for emitting illumination light, an electro-optical device for modulating light from the illuminating optical system according to image information, and a projection optical system for projecting a modulated light beam flux obtained by the electro-optical device. The electro-optical device includes a single-crystal sapphire substrate having nearly a rectangular shape, and a polarizer provided on the single-crystal sapphire substrate on at least one side of a light incidence surface and a light emission surface. The single-crystal sapphire substrate includes a c-axis substantially parallel to the surface of the substrate, and the c-axis has an inclination of about 3° to about 7° with respect to a reference side selected from perpendicularly intersecting two sides of the nearly rectangular shape.

    • Aspects of the invention can provide a lamp device that is capable of avoiding concentration of stresses in a sub-mirror fixing portion of an arc tube. The lamp device can include an arc tube provided with a bulb portion encapsulating inside a pair of electrodes, and a pair of sealing portions formed continuously from the bulb portion and sealing inside electrode axes having the electrodes at tip ends and conductor foils to bring the electrode axes into conduction, a main reflection mirror, to which the sealing portion is fixed, to reflect lights emitted from the arc tube toward an illuminated region, and a sub-mirror fixed to the sealing portion in such a manner that a reflection surface opposes the main reflection mirror with the bulb portion in between. The sub-mirror can be bonded with a bonding agent to a surface region of the sealing portion present in a direction moving away from the bulb portion in reference to a position corresponding to a termination of the electrode axis.
