    • A cassette for sheet film has a cover and a bottom which are hinged to one another along a longitudinal edge of the cassette. Locking elements for locking the cover and bottom when the cassette is closed are arranged at the opposite longitudinal edge of the cassette. The cover and bottom cooperate to define a film compartment and the bottom has a rigid, flat wall for supporting a sheet of film. The cover has a window for exposing the film in the compartment and is further provided with a slot which slidably receives a shield for protecting the film against light until such time as the film is to be exposed. A resilient rim is mounted on the cover and extends around the window. The rim is arranged to press the margins of the film against the rigid wall of the bottom when the cassette is closed. The hinged connection of the cover and the bottom causes the rim to contact the film progressively as the cassette is closed so that the rim stretches the film flat over the rigid wall of the bottom. The pressure of the rim on the margins of the film after the cassette has been closed insures that the film remains flat regardless of the orientation of the cassette.

    • The interelectrode gap of an ionography imaging chamber is connected with a variable-volume container which is filled with a high Z gas at atmospheric pressure, and with first and second accumulators which respectively contain high Z gas at a higher and lower superatmospheric pressure. A timer circuit actuates valves in the conduits between the chamber on the one hand and the container and accumulators on the other hand in a given sequence so that, when the pressure of high Z gas in the gap is to be raised to an operating pressure which exceeds the aforementioned higher pressure, the circuit opens a first valve which allows gas to flow from the second accumulator into the chamber and thereafter a second valve which allows gas to flow from the first accumulator into the chamber. The circuit thereupon starts a pump which conveys gas from the container into the chamber whereby the volume of the container decreases. The pumping step is terminated when the pressure in the gap reaches the operating pressure. When the pressure in the gap is to be reduced, the second valve is opened prior to the first valve, and the circuit thereupon opens a third valve which connects the gap with the container so that the container expands until the pressure in the gap drops to atmospheric pressure.

    • Apparatus for admitting sheets of unexposed X-ray film into and for removing sheets of exposed X-ray film from cassettes of the type having two pivotally connected sections which are separably locked to each other has a housing with a wall which is pivotable to and from an open position in which a cassette containing a sheet of exposed film is inserted into the housing so that one of its sections lies against a pivotable partition while the latter assumes a first position to thereby seal a cassette-receiving first compartment from a second compartment of the housing. A mechanism is actuated in the closed position of the wall to unlock the cassette in the first compartment and to hold the other section of such cassette against movement with the partition. The partition is thereupon pivoted to a lowermost position, together with the one section of the cassette, so that the exposed sheet can descend by gravity into a tray in the second compartment. On its way back to the first position, the partition moves the one section into the range of a suction head which transfers an unexposed sheet from a tray in the second compartment into the space between the two sections. The cassette is locked and its other section detached from the mechanism when the partition returns to its first position, and the locked cassette is removed from the first compartment on movement of the wall to open position.

    • Apparatus for removing dust from dielectric receptor sheets which are about to be introduced into an ionography imaging chamber for exposure to object-modulated X-rays or for developing latent images on such sheets has a drum which rotates about a horizontal axis and has a first section of larger radius which is shorter than a sheet and a second section of smaller radius which is longer than a sheet. Both sections have suction ports and grooves which can attract sheets to their external surfaces. A sheet which adheres to the external surface of the second section bypasses the upper level of a supply of developing liquid in a tank which is located below the drum and is relieved of dust or other foreign matter by a corona discharge device which is operative when the second section carries a sheet. A sheet whose median portion is attracted to the external surface of the first section and whose leading and trailing portions extend inwardly to the level of the external surface of the second section is caused to move successive increments of its median portion into contact with the developing liquid when the drum is rotated. The thus developed image of the sheet on the first section is thereupon fixed by moving past a heating device.

    • An ionography imaging chamber for use in the cassette of an X-ray apparatus has a flat prismatic pressure vessel defining an interelectrode gap for compressed high Z gas and a dielectric charge-receiving sheet which is to be exposed to a pattern of X-rays. The pressure vessel fits into the compartment of a strongly deformation-resistant jacket having a centrally located sleeve consisting primarily of polyurethane foam, a thin tubular inner envelope which consists at least in part of convoluted fibrous material, and a thin tubular outer envelope which also consists at least in part of convoluted fibrous material. That envelope which takes up compressive stresses has a layer of carbon epoxy fibers. The other envelope takes up tensional stresses and contains Kevlar fibers. The pressure vessel has two flat tray-shaped main portions which consist of polyurethane foam. The main portions of the pressure vessel and/or the sleeve of the jacket may be strengthened by inserts consisting of metal or a synthetic plastic material with fibrous reinforcements embedded therein.

Further circuits directly connected to the capacitor serve to energize the exhaust pump operation when the voltage across the capacitor has reached a predetermined voltage.
