    • An apparatus includes a microwave source that produces a microwave feed beam, and a first pair of microwave sensors that each intercept and receive a portion of the microwave feed beam. The two microwave sensors are spaced apart from each other along a first-pair axis. A first phase-comparison device has as it inputs the output signals of the two microwave sensors, and as an output a first phase comparison of the first-sensor output signal and the second-sensor output signal. A first geometrical calculator has as an input the first phase comparison and as an output a geometrical relationship of the first-pair axis to an other feature. This geometrical relationship output may be used to generate a control signal that is used to alter the geometrical relationship. There may be additional microwave sensors operating in a similar manner but spaced to provide information for other geometrical axes or allow improvements in geometrical measurements.

    • A common aperture reflector antenna and feed are provided for use in common aperture sensor systems. The feed includes an array of individual elements. The array elements are configured to increase the overall efficiency of a reflector antenna by flattening the aperture illumination, and also by nullifying the illumination within the centrally-blocked-portion of the reflector antenna surface. More specifically, the array elements are carefully configured with respect to spacing and excitation, for example, such that the array illuminates only the non-blocked portion of the main reflector. In addition, the array pattern is optimized such that the non-blocked portion of the reflector antenna is quasi-uniformly illuminated.

    • A broadband, high power balun which includes plural sets of first and second coaxial cables. Each cable has a center conductor and a shield conductor. Each shield conductor of each cable within each set is connected to a shield conductor of the other coaxial cable of the set. The first input lead is connected to a first end of a center conductor of a first coaxial cable of each set. The second input lead is connected to a first end of a center conductor of a second coaxial cable of each set. A second end of a center conductor of a first coaxial cable of a set of coaxial cables provides an output lead for the balun. A second end of a center conductor of a second coaxial cable of a set of coaxial cables provides an output lead for the balun. A second end of each remaining center conductor of each coaxial cable of each set of coaxial cables is connected to a second end of a center conductor of a coaxial cable of another set of coaxial cables. The inventive balun design allows for larger center conductors and lower characteristic impedances than conventional baluns. This permits impedance matching across a broad bandwidth at high power levels.

    • A method and system for use in phototypesetting. A type font character is scanned and character data representative of the font character is generated. The scan data is encoded in accordance with a first predetermined sequence of steps to have the form of an ordered succession of code words. The stored encoded font data is processed in conjunction with character selection control signals to specify a line-to-be-typeset. The selected character data is decoded in accordance with a second predetermined sequence of steps. The first (encoding) and second (decoding) sequences of steps are related so that the format of the stored encoded data is specifically ordered so that it may be utilized in the decoding process as that data is presented. The decoded selected character data is then converted to video signals for an output cathode ray tube. The decoding sequence may be performed to generate stroke signals for the output cathode ray tube (CRT) of a conventional phototypesetting system during the corresponding strokes in the raster pattern of that output CRT operation. The encoding sequence of steps is adapted so that the decoding sequence may be selectively modified to provide selective scaling of the reproduction of the selected characters.
