    • A medium access control (MAC) entity first computes an achievable rate region based on a total transmit power limit and a channel gain of each of a plurality of WTRUs. Next, the MAC entity selects an order of DPC among the WTRUs. A rate set for use in transmitting to the WTRUs is then selected, said rate set being within the computed achievable rate region. Then, based on the selected DPC order and rate set, a DPC entity performs DPC on a plurality of data streams intended for the plurality of WTRUs. If nested lattice-based DPC is utilized, rate compatibility is achieved by selecting proper nesting ratios corresponding to a desired data rate set. Otherwise, if binary-code based DPC is utilized, rate compatibility is achieved via selecting appropriate message input sizes for input to point-to-point coding units prior to performing DPC.

    • An orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-code division multiple access (CDMA) system is disclosed. The system includes a transmitter and a receiver. At the transmitter, a spreading and subcarrier mapping unit spreads an input data symbol with a complex quadratic sequence code to generate a plurality of chips and maps each chip to one of a plurality of subcarriers. An inverse discrete Fourier transform is performed on the chips mapped to the subcarriers and a cyclic prefix (CP) is inserted to an OFDM frame. A parallel-to-serial converter converts the time-domain data into a serial data stream for transmission. At the receiver, a serial-to-parallel converter converts received data into multiple received data streams and the CP is removed from the received data. A discrete Fourier transform is performed on the received data streams and equalization is performed. A despreader despreads an output of the equalizer to recover the transmitted data.

    • A wireless communication method and apparatus for scheduling data having different priorities for a plurality of wireless transmit/receive units (WTRUs), (i.e., users) is disclosed. The normalized average active throughput for each of the WTRUs is computed. Then, the normalized channel quality for each of the WTRUs is computed based on a reported channel quality indicator (CQI) and the respective normalized average active throughput. A sequence of WTRUs is arranged in an order of decreasing normalized channel quality for each data priority. As much of the data as possible is scheduled for the WTRUs in the order of decreasing normalized channel quality of WTRUs. The scheduling is performed until there are no more physical resources available. Several of the WTRUs can be scheduled in the same transmission timing interval (TTI) if there are enough physical resources.The normalized average active throughput of each WTRU is computed. The normalized channel quality of each WTRU is computed based on a channel quality indicator (CQI) and the respective normalized average active throughput. The data with the highest priority and the WTRU with the best normalized channel quality are selected. As much of the highest priority data as possible is scheduled for each WTRU. When sufficient physical resources are available, and there are no more WTRUs associated with the highest priority data, the data with the next highest priority and the WTRU with the best normalized channel quality that is not associated with the highest priority data are selected. Several WTRUs can be scheduled in the same transmission timing interval (TTI) if there are enough physical resources.

    • A method and apparatus for minimizing redundant enhanced uplink (EU) allocation requests and fault-tolerating EU transmission failures that occur between a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) (102) and a Node-B (104). The WTRU (102) transmits an enhanced dedicated channel (E-DCH) allocation request to the Node-B (104) over an uplink (UL) EU channel (110). In one embodiment, if E-DCH allocation cannot be provided within a predetermined time period, the Node-B sends an acknowledgement message to the WTRU via a downlink (DL) EU signaling channel (112) without sending E-DCH allocation information. The request is queued in the Node-B and the WTRU refrains from transmitting the same request until after the time period expires or resources become available. In another embodiment, appropriate actions are taken to correct EU transmission failures by determining whether an E-DCH allocation request was unsuccessfully delivered via the UL EU channel or whether channel allocation information was unsuccessfully delivered via the DL EU signaling channel.

    • A method and apparatus for assigning automatic repeat request (ARQ)/hybrid-autoniatic repeat request (H-ARQ) processes (114) in a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) (102) to support enhanced uplink (EU) data transmissions. After parameters associated with the ARQ/H-ARQ processes are configured, the WTRU assigns an ARQ/H-ARQ process for selected data. After transmitting the data, the WTRU determines whether feedback information for the data has been received. The WTRU releases the ARQ/H-ARQ process if an acknowledgement (ACK) message has been received, and retransmits the data if a non-acknowledgement (NACK) message or no feedback information has been received in a predetermined time period while incrementing a transmission counter (118) in the WTRU. When an ARQ/H-ARQ transmission limit has been reached, the WTRU may discard the data or reinitiate the transmission. An ARQ/H-ARQ process assigned for transmission of lower priority data may be preempted for transmission of higher priority data when there is no available ARQ/H-ARQ process.
