In one aspect, media content is selectively applied to a content description template to author media in a content description. The content description template provides a temporal structure for the applied media content. A content representation template is selected and combined with the temporally structured media in the content description to specify rendering criteria and generate a content description and representation for one or more of rendering, sharing, and exporting the temporally structured authored media.

    • Systems and methods are described for creating a video booklet that allows browsing and search of a video library. In one implementation, each video in the video library is divided into segments. Each segment is represented by a thumbnail image. Signatures of the representative thumbnails are extracted and stored in a database. The thumbnail images are then printed into an artistic paper booklet. A user can photograph one of the thumbnails in the paper booklet to automatically play the video segment corresponding to the thumbnail. Active shape modeling is used to identify and restore the photo information to the form of a thumbnail image from which a signature can be extracted for comparison with the database.

    • Computer-implemented methods for power management of network interface devices are disclosed. Such methods may include dividing a time period into a plurality of time slots, determining an amount of data received by the network interface device during a first of the time slots, and determining whether the amount of data received exceeds a predefined threshold. If the amount of data received exceeds the predefined threshold, then the network interface device is caused to be awake during a subsequent time slot. The network interface device is caused to go to sleep during the subsequent time slot unless the amount of data received exceeds the predefined threshold. A number of the time slots may be defined as wakeup time slots during which the network interface device is awake. The number of time slots during the time period in which one or more packets were received by the network interface device may be compared to the number of wakeup time slots during the time period. Based on the comparison, the number of wakeup time slots may be adjusted for a subsequent time period.

    • The techniques and mechanisms described herein are directed to controlling communication paths between conference members in a decentralized multi-party conference that supports a full mesh architecture. Several check points are tested in order to handle concurrency issues and to ensure quality of service. First, a check is made to determine whether any pending communication paths exist between the two systems. Second, a check is made to determine whether one of the systems is in the process of leaving the multi-party conference. Third, a check is made to determine whether a maximum number of conference members already exist in the conference. Upon failing any of these checks, the communication path between the two systems fails. Upon success, the new system initiates the joining process with each of the other members in the conference in order to maintain the full mesh architecture.
