The actuator may be a rotary or linear actuator, and may be particularly well-suited for avionics applications.

    • A method and system for reducing latency in initiation of a real-time data session between wireless communication stations. In order to initiate a session with one or more target parties, an originating station will send a voice call origination message to a network switch, providing in the origination message (i) a session-initiation feature code and (ii) a target code indicative of the one or more target parties. The switch will then detect the session-initiation feature code as an intelligent-network trigger and responsively signal to a service controller, which will in turn signal to a communication server. The communication server will then invite the originating station and each of the one or more target parties to participate in the session, setting up a conference leg with each and bridging the legs together to allow the session to proceed.

    • The present invention is an insect screen with improved durability designed to serve the primary purpose of keeping out very small insects and pests while maximizing visual clarity, light transmission, and airflow. The insect screen is free from macroscopic permanent deformation when subjected to a blunt instrument deformation test of at least 5 lbs. and has a total light transmission of at least 65%. The inventive insect screen comprises fibers in a warp and fill construction which define openings having a warp dimension and a fill dimension, both of said warp and fill dimensions being equal to or less than about 0.06 inches and equal to or larger than about 0.01 inches, the fibers having a diameter less than about 0.007 inches.

    • An optical amplification system directs a diffraction-limited signal beam through a series of approximately 90.degree. crossings with a number of non-diffraction-limited pump beams in a photorefractive medium. All of the beams are s-polarized, resulting in an energy transfer from the pumps to the signal beam while leaving the signal beam diffraction-limited. The photorefractive medium is preferably a series of BaTiO.sub.3 :Rh crystals that receive the pump and signal beams through orthogonal faces, with their C-axes at approximately 45.degree. to both beams. A binary tree optical distribution network is used to minimize waveguide splits in forming a large number of pump beams. The outputs of several amplification modules are combined into a single output beam using adaptive optics, with the outputs from the different modules phase matched to each other by diverting two minor portions of the combined beam, partially overlapping the diverted beams and adjusting the amplification module phases to cancel phase differentials between the overlapped portions. Similarly, sets of combined and phase-matched beams can be combined with each other (again using adaptive optics) to generate still higher powers using a super module approach.

    • A semiconductor laser array having a plurality of waveguides at least some of which are directly joined at Y-junctions. The region near the Y-junctions provides a phase boundary condition in which lightwaves propagating in adjacent waveguides are in phase. A combination of strong and weak waveguiding is provided, with strong waveguides that eliminate evanescent coupling from occuring at least in the Y-junction regions, and with weak guides near one or both end facets permitting evanescent coupling. The evanescent coupling between adjacent weak waveguides preserves the in phase relationship that was established in the Y-junction regions, resulting in a diffraction limited single lobe far field output. Alternatively, even without evanescent coupling, the modes can adjust their phases in the weak waveguides, where the propagation constant is less tightly specified by the geometry.
