    • Methods and apparatus for maintaining Mobile IP operation in a Home Agent are disclosed. In a Home Agent, a Mobile Node is registered and a registration entry is created in a mobility binding table for the Mobile Node. A multicast message is then sent to a virtual router group to which the Home Agent belongs and with which the Home Agent shares a virtual IP address. The multicast message notifies the virtual router group of the registration. A similar process may be performed when a Mobile Node is de-registered. When an active or non-active Home Agent is initialized, it sends a multicast mobility binding table request to the redundancy group indicating that bindings are requested. The Home Agent may then receive bindings in response to the request and update its mobility binding table with the received bindings.

    • Methods and apparatus for authenticating a mobile node are disclosed. A server is configured to provide a plurality of security associations associated with a plurality of mobile nodes. A packet identifying a mobile node may then be sent to the server from a network device such as a Home Agent. A security association for the mobile node identified in the packet may then be obtained from the server. The security association may be sent to the network device to permit authentication of the mobile node. Alternatively, authentication of the mobile node may be performed at the server by applying the security association.

    • Methods and apparatus for sending a registration request packet on behalf of a node that supports PPP but does not support Mobile IP is implemented in a Foreign Agent. The method comprises accepting a call from the node and receiving authentication information associated with a PPP authentication protocol from the node, the authentication information enabling a PPP node to be authenticated. From this authentication information, a PPP node profile is obtained. The PPP node profile includes registration information associated with the node that enables proxy registration to be performed by the Foreign Agent on behalf of the node, where the registration information associated with the node identifies a Home Agent associated with the node. The registration information may also include other information that may be pertinent to the composition of a registration request packet. A registration request packet including the registration information associated with the node is then composed and sent to the Home Agent on behalf of the node. The registration request packet that is sent by the Foreign Agent also may include a registration indicator indicating whether registration being performed by the Foreign Agent on behalf of the node is a re-registration by the Foreign Agent or an initial registration by the Foreign Agent. More particularly, in accordance with one embodiment, the registration request packet includes a sequence number indicating an order within a sequence of one or more registrations performed by one or more Foreign Agents on behalf of the node. From the sequence number, a Home Agent receiving the registration request packet may determine whether the Foreign Agent is performing a re-registration or an initial registration on behalf of the node.

    • Methods and apparatus for enabling intra-agent mobility by a mobile node are disclosed, thereby permitting a mobile node to register with a Home Agent via a Foreign Agent where the Home Agent and the Foreign Agent are provided in the same router. A method of registering a mobile node visiting a Foreign Agent with a Home Agent includes receiving a registration request packet specifying a Home Address and a care-of address. It is then determined whether the Home Address specified in the registration request packet is equivalent to a Home Agent address associated with the router. In addition, it may be determined whether the care-of address specified in the registration request packet is equivalent to a Foreign Agent address advertised by the router. Alternatively, it may be determined whether the D bit specified in the registration request packet is set and the care-of address specified in the registration request packet is a collocated care-of address. The mobile node may then be registered with the Home Agent through the use of a physical interface on the router rather than creating or specifying a tunnel interface to reach the mobile node or the Home Agent.

    • Methods and apparatus for assigning an IP address to a mobile node during registration are disclosed. According to one aspect, a registration request is sent by a mobile node. A mobile node ID associated with the mobile node is obtained. A registration request packet is then composed. The registration request packet stores at least a portion of the mobile node ID in the registration request packet. The registration request packet is sent to a Home Agent associated with the mobile node. According to another aspect, a registration request packet is processed by a Home Agent. The Home Agent receives the registration request packet and ascertains whether the mobile node designated by the registration request packet needs an IP address. An IP address is assigned to the mobile node if it is ascertained that the mobile node needs an IP address. A registration reply specifying the IP address assigned to the mobile node is then composed. According to another aspect, a registration reply packet received by a Foreign Agent is processed. The registration reply packet is received from a Home Agent. The registration reply packet specifies a portion of a mobile node ID and an IP address associated with a mobile node. The portion of the mobile node ID and the IP address are obtained from the registration reply packet. A visitor table is updated with a mapping of the mobile node ID to the IP address. The registration reply packet is sent to the mobile node.

    • Systems and methods for providing identity management and mobility management are disclosed. The management scheme provides mobility in multi-device and multi-homed deployments. A collection of three identities, a device identity, a link layer identity, and a user identity, can be used to provide mobility for a number of devices under different use scenarios. In one embodiment, a method is disclosed for receiving messages from a mobile device at a mobility gateway, the messages including identifiers such as a user identifier, a link layer identifier, and a device identifier where identifiers are stored or retained at the mobility gateway. When a subsequent network attach request is received including one or more identifiers, a reconnection can occur, based on a result of comparing the stored identifiers with the received one or more identifiers.
