摘要： A thermally driven piston assembly's housing has (i) a first material slidingly fitted therein, and (ii) at least one plug of a second material slidingly fitted therein and abutting the first material. The first material is one (e.g., a liquid crystal elastomer) that undergoes a stiffness change and/or a dimensional change when subjected to a temperature change in the temperature range of interest. When subjected to the temperature change while in the housing, the first material is restricted to changing dimensionally along a single dimension. The second material retains its shape and size throughout the temperature range of interest. As a result, the plug moves in the housing in correspondence with the dimensional change of the first material or the plug's movement is damped by the stiffness change of the first material.

摘要： A hog farrowing system for use in a cold environment includes a building providing protection from weather elements. The farrowing boxes have an entrance to permit free ingress and egress of female hogs but restrain the piglets. An alley is provided outside the boxes for the female hogs to defecate, urinate, and move to feed and water stations outside the boxes. The boxes have sides which define an inner chamber, a heat system, bedding for the female hogs to nest, and insulation covering an open top during cold environment conditions. The method utilizes the steps of promoting the female hog to utilize natural instincts, promoting the female hog to give birth to piglets close to the heat source, and protecting the piglets from crushing by using a creep area, anti-crush rods and anti-crush boards. The farrowing boxes can be modified for use in a warm season.

摘要： Method and communication system for a railroad train having at least one locomotive for automatically adjusting the communication system to provide effective communication of command data to control operation of the locomotive are provided. The system includes a transceiver on the locomotive. The system further includes at least one transceiver remote from the locomotive. A database may be provided for storing data relative to a plurality of communication schemes available to the communication system. A first monitor may be used for sensing a parameter indicative of the quality of the communications between the transceivers when the transceivers are operating under a first one of the available communication schemes and generating data indicative of communications quality. A processor in communication-with the monitor and the database may be configured to select a second communication scheme when the quality of the communications provided by the first communication scheme is not satisfactory to ensure that the command data will be reliably communicated with respect to the locomotive.
