    • A light analyzer device and a method for detecting objects utilizing the light analyzer device are provided. The light analyzer device includes a focal plane array configured to receive the light that has passed through a light filter and to generate a first digital image based on the light that has passed through the light filter. The light analyzer device further includes a microprocessor operably coupled to the focal plane array. The microprocessor is configured to receive the first digital image, and to determine whether the first digital image corresponds to a stored digital image. The light analyzer device further includes a light emitting device operably coupled to the microprocessor. The microprocessor is further configured to induce the light emitting device to output a visual indicator indicating that the first digital image corresponds to the stored digital image.

    • The present invention is directed to a system for acoustically controlling an automotive or aircraft vehicle's automatic climate control system. The acoustic HVAC control system determines an average air temperature using an ultrasonic transducer. The transducer transmits and receives an ultrasonic pulse along a pre-selected path within the vehicle's interior and concurrently measures the interval time between sending and receiving the pulse. An average air temperature is calculated based on the interval time. The determined average air temperature is evaluated against a pre-selected setpoint temperature and determines whether the vehicle's automatic climate control system controller controls an air blower fan speed, discharge temperature, and air delivery mode to the cabin to adjust the vehicle's interior air temperature near an occupant to a desired temperature. The average air velocity along the pre-selected path can also be determined from the difference in interval times for ultrasonic pulses traveling in opposite directions along the pre-selected path.

    • An alcohol sensing device is provided for determination of the alcohol content within an alcohol/gasoline fuel mixture which is being provided for the operation of an internal combustion engine. The sensing device uses infrared spectrometry measuring techniques. The infrared sensing device determines the ratio of light absorption by the alcohol/gasoline mixture at two discrete wavelengths within the near-infrared spectrum. The two particular wavelengths of interest are preferably chosen so that at one of the infrared wavelengths, alcohol is strongly absorbing while the gasoline exhibits very little absorption, and at the second wavelength both the alcohol and the gasoline exhibit are essentially non-absorbing. An alternating current is used to switch the light beam between two power settings so as to vary the intensity of transmitted light at both wavelengths. The light beam is transmitted through the alcohol/gasoline fuel mixture so that the two discrete wavelengths traverse the same optical path. Two detectors are adjacently disposed so as to receive the emitted light from each wavelength after their transmission through the alcohol/gasoline fuel mixture. Once the signals corresponding to the two wavelengths are obtained, the ratio of the absorbances by the fuel mixture at both wavelengths is computed. From this ratio, and the temperature of the fuel mixture, the concentration of alcohol in the fuel is determined.

    • A fluid flowmeter includes a sensor mounted on or in the inner surface of a conduit for measuring fluid flow through the conduit where the sensitivity of the sensor is dependent upon the thickness of the fluid boundary layer extending over the sensor. According to the invention, fluid is drawn out of the conduit through an aperture located a predetermined distance upstream of the sensor to remove the boundary layer developed upstream of the sensor thereby rendering the sensor immune to fluctuations in the thickness of the removed boundary layer. At the same time, a fresh boundary layer of reduced thickness and greater stability is initiated over the sensor so as to improve the sensitivity and repeatability of the sensor.
