    • A circuit and method is disclosed that dithers a switching frequency of a DC-to-DC converter which gets modulated onto an RF carrier such that switching noise is spread over a given bandwidth that is wider than a communications measurements bandwidth. The circuit includes a switching circuitry adapted to transfer energy from a source to a load using a switching signal having a series of switching cycles and a switching frequency. Also included is a control circuitry adapted to generate a pseudo-random value near a beginning of each of the series of switching cycles to determine a maximum switching frequency value based upon the pseudo-random value. The method includes adjusting the switching frequency of the switching signal incrementally from a fixed minimum switching frequency value to the maximum frequency value and vice versa as a function of time during each of the series of switching cycles of the switching circuit.

    • A control module which controls battery cells is disclosed which can be used in a charging station, a battery pack and in portable devices such as cellular and cordless phones. The control module comprises a first port configured to connect to a battery cell and an input port configured to connect to an external power supply. Further, the control module comprises a detector module configured to generate a detection signal when the external power supply is connected to the input port, a switching module configured to connect to the input port and the first battery port and to select one of said ports, and a selection module configured to connect to the switching module to receive a signal indicative of an electrical characteristic, and to generating status signals indicative of a charging status. Additionally, the control module has a feedback module associated with the selection module to receive the status signals and to generate a drive signal for controlling input from the external power supply. A processor module is associated with the detection module to receive the detection signal, with the selection module to receive the status signals and with the feedback module to receive the drive signal, and generates control signals to control and terminate charging of the battery cells.

    • The present invention is a switching power supply that switches (dithers) between at least two switching frequencies without introducing a ripple signal at the dithering frequency, which is based on the time duration of a dithering cycle. In one embodiment of the present invention, an average current in an energy transfer element, such as an inductive element, during operation using one switching frequency is regulated to be approximately equal to the average current during operation using any other switching frequency. The average current may be regulated by controlling the durations of transition periods between operating using one switching frequency and operating using another switching frequency. By maintaining a constant average current while operating using different switching frequencies, dithering frequency ripple may be significantly reduced or eliminated.

    • The present invention is ripple cancellation circuitry used with a switching power supply, which provides direct current (DC) power via a DC power amplifier (PA) signal to an RF PA final stage. The DC PA signal includes a DC component and a power supply ripple component, which is generated as a result of the switching characteristics of the switching power supply and creates an output ripple in an RF output signal from the PA final stage. The ripple cancellation circuitry substantially cancels the output ripple by adding a ripple cancellation signal having a ripple component that is phase-shifted approximately 180 degrees from the output ripple to the RF output signal. The ripple cancellation circuitry uses a switching signal that is provided by the switching power supply to generate the ripple cancellation signal.

    • Disclosed is a power management system for a portable phone, for example, a cellular phone operating according to a specific mobile communications standard GSM. The power management system comprises a switching module which switches automatically from a voltage provided by a battery to a voltage provided by an external power supply when the power management system is connected to an external power supply.
