    • A fuel control for an engine using a liquid mixture of two fuels such as gasoline and methanol and derives a fuel control parameter from the output of a fuel composition sensor in a first mode of engine operation and locks the value of the fuel control parameter at the end of the first mode of engine operation for use throughout a second mode of engine operation including closed loop control in response to an air/fuel ratio sensor, as long as the fuel composition does not change more than a predetermined amount during the second mode. The stable operation of the fuel control in the second mode is thus protected from instabilities introduced by small fluctuations in the fuel composition signal. In an engine with adaptive learning control, the adaptive learning control mode is reserved for particularly stable modes of engine operation including closed loop stoichiometric control and thus serves well as the second mode of engine operation.

    • A service-observing arrangement is disclosed for automatically detecting and classifying interrupted tone signals (such as audible ringing, busy, reorder, etc.) which appear on telephone lines. These signals have a certain "pitch rate" discernible by the listener and caused by the combining of a plurality of separate tone signals.The line is scanned and the signals on the line are first passed through a filter to filter out all frequencies within the "pitch rate" spectrum and are not fundamental components of the interrupted signal. The remaining signal is then modulated to produce a significant energy component at the "pitch rate" only if legitimate signals are present. The ratio of pitch rate energy to total energy is then compared to threshold values and its cadence and power consistency are checked to identify the signal.

    • A system is provided for remote determination of the attitude of a vehicle.nboard the vehicle are located two separate arrays of corner cube retroreflectors. Each array of retroreflectors is arranged to form a band around the vehicle at one axial position. The two arrays of reflectors incorporate different optical filters so that each array of reflectors and filters is optimized to provide retroreflection in a particular narrow band of the optical spectrum. Each array's optical spectrum band is different from the band used by the other array of reflectors. The system utilizes a remotely located transmitting-receiving station to provide tracking of the vehicle, continuously sweeping the vehicle with a light source located at the station so that position and attitude of the object, relative to the remote station, are obtained. Included at the ground station are two multimode, continuous wave lasers each providing a single two-color beam which matches the bands of the spectrum of the filtered retroreflecting arrays onboard the vehicle. The time intervals between the pulse receptions from the colored retroreflecting arrays provide the data to determine the vehicle attitude.
