    • The invention addresses the problem that traditional Total Variation only enforces the horizontal and vertical intensity continuity and thus fails to reconstruct oblique edges well. In an embodiment, Directional Total Variation is defined which supports multiple gradient directions. It first pre-processes the image and determines the direction of edges/texture; Directional TV is calculated based on the gradients along the determined direction and its orthogonal direction. By utilizing adaptive weights to different directions in the regularization, Directional TV is capable of preserving edges independent from their orientation nicely. Thus, Directional TV regularization based image denoising, compression or super resolution tend to obtain better quality.

    • A database enables versioning for objects stored in the database via a “snapshot” operation. In one implementation, a device performs a snapshot operation in which a snapshot object, representing a logical view of database objects at a time at which the snapshot operation is performed, is created and stored in the database. In response to a request to store a modified version of a database object, the modified version of the database object is written to replace the previous version of the database object when the database object was last modified after the most recent snapshot operation. Further, in response to the request to store the modified version of the database object, the modified version of the database object is inserted in the database when the previous version of the database object was last modified before the most recent snapshot operation.

    • A microfabricated electron phase shift element is used for modifying the phase characteristics of an electron beam passing though its center aperture, while not affecting the more divergent portion of an incident beam to selectively provide a ninety-degree phase shift to the unscattered beam in the back focal plan of the objective lens, in order to realize Zernike-type, in-focus phase contrast in an electron microscope. One application of the element is to increase the contrast of an electron microscope for viewing weakly scattering samples while in focus. Typical weakly scattering samples include biological samples such as macromolecules, or perhaps cells. Preliminary experimental images demonstrate that these devices do apply a ninety degree phase shift as expected. Electrostatic calculations have been used to determine that fringing fields in the region of the scattered electron beams will cause a negligible phase shift as long as the ratio of electrode length to the transverse feature-size aperture is about 5:1. Calculations are underway to determine the feasibility of aspect smaller aspect ratios of about 3:1 and about 2:1.

    • A portable area monitoring system for use with a horizontal directional drilling machine and adapted to produce a composite of the positions of a beacon and a fixed object.
