    • Bluetooth relay devices can be used for networking different Bluetooth devices. Such relay devices typically have many Bluetooth modules, each of which can communicate with a number of different Bluetooth devices and/or adjacent relay devices. In order to avoid transmitting by one Bluetooth module of a relay device whilst its another Bluetooth module receives, all the Bluetooth modules of the relay device are set as masters and one of them is given control over the others so as to enforce all the Bluetooth modules to time their receptions so that no simultaneous transmissions by another Bluetooth modules occur.

    • A method and system for setting up a local service session in a short-range communications network receives preconfiguration information over a long-range network, and establishes the local service session in the short-range communication network using the received preconfiguration information. The preconfiguration information relates to the establishment of the local service session in the short-range communication network. Accordingly, the received preconfiguration information may include an address of a remote short-range communications device, such as a a Bluetooth device address (BD_ADDR). The received preconfiguration information may also include security information, such a personal identification number (PIN), and/or one or more encryption keys. In addition, the preconfiguration information may include an identifier of an offered short-range service, as well as an identifier indicating a location where the short-range service is offered.

    • A system for facilitating short-range wireless data exchanges between apparatuses that are not linked by a wireless network connection. For example, an apparatus may initially determine if data suitable for transmission without first establishing a formal network connection is pending. For example, in terms of Bluetooth the data may suitable for transmission to another apparatus without having to first negotiate a Bluetooth piconet including both apparatuses. If it determined that data is pending for transmission, the apparatus may scan for apparatus detection packets transmitted from other apparatuses (e.g., enter an inquiry scanning mode). Upon reception of an apparatus detection packet, the apparatus may transmit one or more messages via wireless communication (e.g., execute an extended inquiry response procedure) comprising at least the data.

    • Example method, apparatus, and computer program product embodiments are disclosed to enable out-of-band short-range communication carrier transport switching for connection setup of in-band device-to-device communication. Example embodiments of the invention include a method comprising the steps of transmitting, by a first device via an out-of-band short-range communication carrier, an indication to a second device that a carrier switch from the out-of-band short-range communication carrier to an in-band short-range communication carrier is desired; receiving in response to the transmitted indication, a response from the second device via the out-of-band short-range communication carrier including an indication that the carrier switch from the out-of-band short-range communication carrier to the in-band short-range communication carrier is confirmed; and modifying, by the first device, device detection procedure associated with the in-band short-range communication carrier to improve detection of paging signals on the in-band short-range communication carrier.
